Syntheses of Random Aromatic Copolyamide-Urea Polymers and Their Characterization

Aromatic copolyamide-urea polymers were obtained by random copolymerization of p-phenylene diamine, methylene bis(4-phenyl isocyanate) or toluene 2, 4-diisocyanate and terephthaloyl chloride. The copoymers were identified by means of elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Inherent viscosity of the copolymers lies between 0.43 to 1.87 in H2SO4 solution. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed characteristic decomposition temperatures of the copolymers. Differential thermal analysis showed neither distinct glass transition temperature nor melting point, and exhibited exothermic degradation. The thermal stability and acid resistance of copolyamide-urea polymers increased as the mole ratio of aromatic polymide increased. When the copolymers have a composition of 0-50 mole % amide linkage in the chain, the polymers showed a good solubility in DMF, DMSO, NMP, DMAc or their mixed solvents containing about 5% lithium chloride.
