Copolymerization of Maleanilic Acid with Acrylonitrile and Styrene

Abstract

Maleanilic acid (MAA) was synthesized by the reaction of maleic anhydride with aniline and copolymerized in DMF by AIBN initiation with acrylonitrile (AN) and styrene. The monomer reactivity ratios were calculated by the intersection method, the Fineman Ross method, and the Kelen-Tudos Method. And the penultimate unit effect was also measured. From the data of the monomer reactivity ratios it was found that MAA molecule reacted only to a small extent with AN, but readily with styrene. The intrinsic viscosity and the tensile strength of AN-MAA copolymer were decreased with increasing the mole fraction of MAA in feed, but the moisture regain of the copolymer was linearly increased in proportion to the mole fraction of MAA in feed. The antistatic property of AN-MAA copolymer was to a great extent improved in comparison with that of AN homopolymer. The intrinsic viscosity of styrene-MAA copolymer showed the minimum value when the mole fraction of MAA in feed was 0.4. The solubility of styrene-MAA copolymer varied with the change of MAA content in the copolymer. The Alfrey-Price Q and e values for MAA were calculated.

Maleic anhydride와 aniline으로부터 maleanilic acid(MAA)를 합성하고 DMF 중에서 MAA-acrylonitrile(AN) 및 MAA-styrene의 공중합을 행하였다. Intersection method, Fineman-Ross method 및 Kelen-Tudos method에 의하여 단량체 반응성비를 구하였으며 penultimate unit effect를 측정해 보았다. 단량체 반응성비에 관한 자료들로부터 MAA는 AN과의 반응성이 작지만 styrene과는 쉽게 반응한다는 것을 알 수 있었다. AN-MAA 공중합체에 있어서 점도와 인장강도는 MAA의 몰분율을 증가시킴에 따라 감소하였으나, 수분율은 증가하였으며 대전성은 AN단중합체와 비교하여 크게 개선되었다. Styrene-MAA 공중합체의 점도는 feed에서 MAA의 몰분율이 0.4일 때 극소치를 나타냈으며, 용해성은 공중합체내의 MAA함량에 따라 변화하였다. 또 MAA에 대한 Alfrey-Price의 Q와 값을 구하였다.
