Abstract

This study is related to improve the hydrophilicity of durable-press finished cotton and polyester/cotton fabrics with PEG-derivative. This PEG-derivative was synthesized as follows: N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl PEG diamine obtained from the methylation of PEG-diamine with formic acid and formaldehyed, was quarternized with 3-chloropropyl trimethoxy silane. This quaternized PEG derivative can be named N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-N,N'-bis(3-trimethoxy-silyl)-1-propyl PEG diammonium dichloride, which is avvreviated as MMS-PEG-AC. It was confirmed that MMS-PEG-AC could be not only self-crosslinked by hydrolysis and condensation reaction, but reacted with cellobiose which is the model compound of cellulose, by IR-method. Cotton and P/C fabrics were padded with the solution composed of 120g/1 dmdheu, 20g/1 MgCl26H2O, and 20-80g/1 MMS-PEG-AC, predried at 80℃ for 2min. and cured at 150℃ for 3min. These fabrics were tested on D.P. rating, durability to laundering, water absorptivity and soil release. From these results, it was showed that water absorptivity was increased without decreasing D.P. rating, but soil releasing property was not improved, compared with the only D.P. finished fabric.
