A Simple Total Synthesis of $\alpha$-trans-Atlantone

A simple total synthesis of the sesquiterpene, .alpha.-trans-atlantone which belongs to bisabolane family, is described. The kinetic enolate of mesityl oxide is used as nucleophilic synthon for an intermediate ($\alpha$-bisabololone) synthesis.
