Abstract

In order to investigate the retting of bast fiber for flax stalks, the Bacteria termed "FN-3" which was isolated from the various micro-organisms producing pectin-esterase or polygaloctronase hydrating pectin matter which is contained in crude flax fiber called as gum matter, is applied to retting bast fiber. The results are as follows: 1. In fermenting the crude flax applying with "FN-3", the optimum temperature was found from 29$^{\circ}$-3$0^{\circ}C$ and the optimum pH showed at 6.6 to 7.5. 2. The effect of retting comparing "FN-3" with spontaneous bacteria showed that the decomposition degree of pectin matter was no only higher than the latter but also the former showed higher tenacity during mercerating period applying with "FN-3". 3. Fermentation with "FN-3"required 96 hours to finish fermenting in contrast with 144 hours required for fermentation applying with spontaneous bacteria.tion applying with spontaneous bacteria.
