An Analysis of Hot-Rolling in the Twin-Roll Strip Casting Process by using the Slab Method (슬랩법을 이용한 쌍롤식 박판주조 공정의 열간 압연 해석)

  • In this paper, the slab method have been applied to investigate the strip casting process in which hot coil is produced from molten steel directly. In the twin roll strip casting process, molten steel supplied by the nozzle cools and solidifies due to the heat extraction effect of the rolls and hot rolling of the solidified shell takes place simultaneously. The analysis of hot rolling has been carried out by using the existing results of solidification analysis for the twin roll strip casting process. The current slab method provides basic design data such as roll separation force, rolling torque, rolling power as well as end dam separation force which are required to design strip caster. The effect of friction on the basic process parameters are investigated also. It is shown that the use of appropriate friction coefficient is important and that the characteristics of hot rolling in the twin-roll strip casting process is quite different from the conventional hot rolling processes.

The Effect of Shrink fit on the Thermal Crown Analysis in Twin Roll Strip Casting Process (쌍롤형 박판주조공정에서 열박음을 고려한 열적 크라운해석)

  • In twin roll strip casting process, coupled analyses of heat transfer and deformation for the cast roll are carried out by using the finite element program MARC to examine the thermal crown. Shrink fit effect and plastic deformation are considered. The results shows that the thermal crown is greatly influenced by shrink ft and that the thermal crown for POSCO Pilot Caster 2 Copper Roll has “M” shape. The effects of several factors on thermal crown are also investigated. The amount of thermal crown increases as heat flux, casting speed, steeve thickness and casting roll width increase and decreases as the casting roll diameter increases.

  • An adaptive fuzzy logic controller to regulate molten steel level in the strip casting process is presented, where parameters of fuzzy controllers are adapted stably by using Lyapunov-stability theory and a switching controller is used together to deal with the approximation error of fuzzy logic system. The level error is proven to converge to zero asymptotically. In the simulation, the clogging/unclogging of a stopper nozzle is considered and overcome by the proposed controller. Robustness to uncertainty is shown to be superior to conventional PI controller.

  • The casting roll design is one of the most important requirements in twin roll strip casting process. Coupled analyses of heat transfer and deformation for the cast roll are carried out by use of the finite element program MARC to examine the thermal stress and deformation. The effects of several factors on thermal stress and deformation are also investigated. The amount of thermal stress increases when the ni thickness increases and when the casting speed and the copper sleeve thickness decrease.

  • Strip casting process, a new casting technology which makes thin strip of $0.5{\sim}5\;mm$ thickness directly from molten metal, has been dramatically developed for past 10 years and faced commercialization in the case of STS304 strip. In this study, ductile cast iron strip which is 1.1 mm thick and 100 mm wide is manufactured by the twin roll strip caster. Graphite and matrix structure of the strip can be controlled through heat treatments and the mechanical properties are examined. The microstructure of the as-cast strip consists of cementite and pearlite. Especially the equiaxed crystal zone of pearlite exists in the center region of the thickness due to the characteristics of the strip casting process. Matrix structure can be transformed into fully ferrite or ferrite/pearlite mixed structures by the different graphitization heat treatments. The heat-treated strip with ferrite/pearlite matrix structure showed higher hardness and tensile strength than that with full ferrite matrix structure.

Effect of Heat Treatment on the Tensile Deformation Behavior of Au-Sn Strip Manufactured by Strip Casting Process (박판 주조법으로 제조된 Au-Sn 스트립의 열처리에 따른 인장 변형 거동)

  • This study tried to examine the suitability of strip casting process such as PFC (Planar Flow Casting) method for soldering Au-Sn strip. The effect of heat treatment on the tensile behavior and mechanical properties of an Au-Sn strip was investigated through tensile test, micro hardness test, X-ray diffraction (XRD), SEM, and TEM observations. It was apparent that 20-mm width Au-Sn strip could be well produced by using planar flow casting process. Tensile results showed that tensile strength increased from 338.3MPa to 310MPa and plastic strain improved from 0% to 1.5% with heat treatment ($170^{\circ}C$/70 hrs.). The microstructure of Au-Sn strip mainly consisted of two phases; $Au_5Sn(\zeta)$ and AuSn($\sigma$). It was also found that inhomogeneous amorphous local structure continuously changed to the homogeneous two phases microstructure with heat treatment. The fractographical observation after tensile test indicated the cleavage fracture mode of as-casted Au-Sn strip. On the other hand, the heat treated Au-Sn strip showed that fracture propagated along interface between brittle AuSn and ductile $Au_5Sn$ phases. The deformation behavior of strip casted Au-Sn alloy with microstructural evolution and the improve method for ductility of this alloy was also suggested.

  • A new steel-making process, strip-casting, is introduced. The strip-casting is a new technique making the thin steel strip from the molten steel directly without resorting to repetitive reheating and hot-rolling required in a conventional steel-making method. This paper derives the mathematical model of strip caster, proposes a control strategy for stable startup operation and a fuzzy decision making rule for automatic control mode change in strip-casting process.

  • In this paper the modeling and control of a twin roll strip caster is investigated. Mathematical models for the strip casting process are obtained by analyzing five critical areas such that the molten steel level in the pool, solidification process, roll separating force and torque, roll dynamics including hydraulic actuators, and roll drive system. A two-level control strategy is proposed. At lower level, three local subsystems are independently feedback-controlled by suitable local controllers which perform well to the behaviors of each subsystem. They are a variable structure control of the molten steel level in the pool, an adaptive predictive control of the roll gap which is directly related to the strip thickness, and an $H^{\infty}$ control of the roll drive system. At higher level, all reference signals to the lower level subsystems are generated by an optimal controller in the perspective of regulating the strip thickness and roll separating force.   • In twin roll strip casting process, the design of casting roll is the most important equipment for producing strip. Analyses of heat transfer and deformation for the casting roll are carried out by using the finite element program, ANSYS. Both the elastic deformation and the elasto-plastic deformation under a thermal load are considered in the analysis. Optimization to minimize the volume of roll is performed under the various thermal loads such as the heat flux and the roll speed. Design variables are defined by diameters and positions of the cooling hole in the roll , Although the thermal load remarkably varies, the design variables and objective function are found to be consistent.

  • MMI system for strip caster 2 is described. It has been developed as a PC-based MMI system whose data is collected from the VME-based control system by ETHERNET. MMI elements that mimic the caster and its utilities are designed by using commercial program. In order to implement the UDP/IP communication in MMI, UDP/IP manager program with DDE that is a intercommunication protocol in MS-window is developed and connected with MMI mimics. Operator commands in MMI system are carried out immediately in VME system and the responses are displayed on MMI system. The developed MMI system has been proven to be convenient and stable through the operation of the past 5 years.
