  • In this paper, we propose a method dividing effectively the hand and fingers using general webcam. The method executes 4 times empirically preprocessing one to erase noise. First, it erases the overall noise of the image using Gaussian smoothing. Second, it changes from RGB image to HSV color model and YCbCr color model, executes a global static binarization based on the statistical value for each color model, and erase the noise through bitwise-OR operation. Third, it executes outline approximation and inner region filling algorithm using RDP algorithm and Flood fill algorithm and erase noise. Lastly, it erases noise through morphological operation and determines the threshold propositional to the image size and selects the hand and fingers area. This paper compares to existing one color based hand area division method and focuses the noise deduction and can be used to a gesture recognition application.

  • In order to study the effects of fiber shapes and fiber assembly structure on the mechanical properties and hand value of a woven fabric, fabrics were prepared using various cross-section fibers. For the rigorous study, the fabrics were woven on the same weaving loom under the identical processing conditions. The mechanical properties of the fabrics were measured using KES-FB system and the hand values for women's thin dress application were calculated from the measured properties using KN-203-LDY. For simple analysis, cluster analysis was carried out and the fabrics were categorized into three groups. The experimental research found that mechanical properties and hand values of the fabrics depends significantly on the fiber cross-section types and fiber assembly structure. The results revealed that the compactness of fiber assembly showed greater influence on the hand values than the cross-sectional shape of the filaments.

  • This study evaluates the objective and subjective hand as well as the preference for hand and outdoor jackets on laminated waterproof breathable fabrics with different constituent characteristics to identify those best suited for consumer needs. Mechanical properties and objective hands were measured by the KES-FB system. The subjective hand and the preference of laminated waterproof breathable fabric for outdoor jackets were rated by the 20's and 30's women experts with tactile and visual senses that utilized a questionnaire with a seven-point semantic differential scale; subsequently, the flexibility and compressive elasticity of laminated waterproof breathable fabrics were low. However, light and thin waterproof breathable fabrics with a smooth surface had high scores in smoothness, fullness & softness and total hand value. In addition, laminated waterproof breathable fabrics were classified into three hand factors: flexibility, density, and surface properties. There were significant differences on flexibility and surface property perceptions, hand and out-door jackets preferences according to the characteristics of waterproof breathable fabrics. The hand preference of the laminated waterproof breathable fabric improved with decreasing 2HB and increasing EM. However, EM showed positive effect for outdoor jacket preferences. Those that were flexible and smooth were preferred for outdoor jackets.

  • This paper discussed the assessment of hand of polyester fabrics changed by alkaline hydrolysis. This study analyzed the relations between the change of mechanical property and the hand value according to the weight loss of polyester fabrics. The results are as follows; Objective hand by KES-FB system, revealed that for tensile properties, as the weight loss increased, WT, RT increased and LT decreased. For bending properties, as the weight loss increased, B and 2HB showed smaller values. For shear properties, as the weight loss increased, G, 2HG and 2HG5 decreased. For surface properties, as the weight loss increased, MIU increased, but MMD and SMD did not show any trend. For compression properties, LC, WC and RC did not show significant differences according to the degree of weight loss. In case of hand value, Koshi(stiffness), Hari(anti-drape stiffness), Kisimi(scrooping feeling) and Shinayakasa(flexibility with soft feeling) showed a meaningful results depending on the degree of weight loss. However, Shari(crispness) and Fukurami(fullness and softness) did not show meaningful result. Koshi, Hari and Shinayakasa are high correlation with tensile property, bendibg property shear properties, thickness and weight. Kisimi is high correlation with tensile property, bending property, thickness and weight. Shari, Fukurami and THV did not show any meaningful difference whth any mechanical properties.

  • Textile fabrics used for interior and home contact with the human body frequently, hence the importance of comfort including hand should be considered. The assessment methods of comfort for the interior textile materials have not been studied even though there are many previous researches in the field of wear comfort. The relationships between the mechanical properties and interior fabric hands through mechanical testing and statistical analysis tech niques were identified. In this study, 18 kinds of chenille and jacquard fabrics used for seat cover were selected. The Kawabata Evaluation System was used to measure the mechanical properties for 18 fabrics and THV(total hand value) determined by subjective evaluation of 10 participants of an expert panel was also utilized. We ran the stepwise regression analysis to select the most significant mechanical properties and to develop the prediction models for hands. The tensile properties, bending, thickness and the mean deviation of surface friction were selected as the significant mechanical properties affecting fabric hands. In addition, the interior fabrics were categorized into five groups through the cluster analysis using four mechanical properties. The THV, constituent yams, and such fabric structural factors as pile floating area and pattern showed significant differences among five groups. The interior fabric hands are expected to improve through controlling the four mechanical properties by applying the structural factors for fabric design and construction.

  • Objective : The aim of this study is to establish the value of hand elevation test as a reproducible provocative test for the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Methods : We had a prospective study of 45 hands of 38 patients diagnosed with CTS between April 2005 and February 2009. The diagnosis of CTS was based on the American Academy of Neurology clinical diagnostic criteria. Experimental and control group patients underwent Tinel's test, Phalen's test, carpal compression test and hand elevation test as provocative tests for CTS. Results : We used chi-square analysis to compare Tinel's test and Phalen's test, carpal compression test with hand elevation test. The sensitivity and specificity of the hand elevation test is 86.7% and 88.9% each. Tinel's test had 82.2% sensitivity and 88.9% specificity. Phalen's test had 84.4% sensitivity and 86.7% specificity. Carpal compression test had 84.4% sensitivity 82.2% specificity. Comparisons of sensitivity and specificity between hand elevation test and Tinel's test, Phalen's test, and carpal compression test had no statistically significant differences. To compare the diagnostic accuracies of four tests, the area under the non-parametric receiver operating character curve was applied. Conclusion : The hand elevation test has higher sensitivity and specificity than Tinel's test, Phalen's test, and carpal compression test. Chi-square statistical analysis confirms the hand elevation test is not ineffective campared with Tinel's test, Phalen's test, and carpal compression test.
