  • Abstract. Image segmentation is always a challenging task in computer vision as well as in pattern recognition. Nowadays, this method has great importance in the field of stereo vision. The disparity information extracting from the binocular image pairs has essential relevance in the fields like Stereoscopic (3D) Imaging Systems, Virtual Reality and 3D Graphics. The term 'disparity' represents the horizontal shift between left camera image and right camera image. Till now, many methods are proposed to visualize or estimate the disparity. In this paper, we present a new technique to visualize the horizontal disparity between two stereo images based on image segmentation method. The process of comparing left camera image with right camera image is popularly known as 'Stereo-Matching'. This method is used in the field of stereo vision for many years and it has large contribution in generating depth and disparity maps. Correlation based stereo-matching are used most of the times to visualize the disparity. Although, for few stereo image pairs it is easy to estimate the horizontal disparity but in case of some other stereo images it becomes quite difficult to distinguish the disparity. Therefore, in order to visualize the horizontal disparity between any stereo image pairs in more robust way, a novel stereo-matching algorithm is proposed which is named as "Quadtree Segmentation of Pixels Disparity Estimation (QSPDE)".

  • This paper describes an algorithm that improves 3D reconstruction result using a multi-sensor fusion disparity map. We can project LRF (Laser Range Finder) 3D points onto image pixel coordinatesusing extrinsic calibration matrixes of a camera-LRF (${\Phi}$, ${\Delta}$) and a camera calibration matrix (K). The LRF disparity map can be generated by interpolating projected LRF points. In the stereo reconstruction, we can compensate invalid points caused by repeated pattern and textureless region using the LRF disparity map. The result disparity map of compensation process is the multi-sensor fusion disparity map. We can refine the multi-sensor 3D reconstruction based on stereo vision and LRF using the multi-sensor fusion disparity map. The refinement algorithm of multi-sensor based 3D reconstruction is specified in four subsections dealing with virtual LRF stereo image generation, LRF disparity map generation, multi-sensor fusion disparity map generation, and 3D reconstruction process. It has been tested by synchronized stereo image pair and LRF 3D scan data.

  • In this paper, An algorithm which converts 2D video frames into 3D video frames of parallel looking stereo camea is proposed. The proposed algorithm finds the disparity information between two consecutive video frames and generates 3D video frames from the obtained disparity maps. The disparity information is obtained from the modified iterative convergence algorithm. The method of generating 3D video frames from the disparity information is also proposed. The proposed algorithm uses coherence method which overcomes the video pattern based algorithms.

  • This paper describes a method for making the "disparity pattern" which is basis of image matching with brightness difference; called disparity, between multiple model images, and an algorithm which recognizes hand shape by utilizing the pattern in measuring the distance between a input image and model images. The virtue of the algorithm is that only simple brightness difference calculated from multiple images by managing a whole image as the fundamental processing unit is patterned in two dimensional shape and then is used in the recognition process. Consequently, this method is very useful for other recognition algorithm requiring comparison of large scale image since correlation among multiple model images is applied simultaneously in recognition process.

  • ATSC-M/H based hybrid 3DTV, which is one of the service compatible 3DTV system, has considerable quality gap between the left and right views. And CRA(Conditional Replenishment Algorithm) has been proposed to deal with the issue of resolution mismatch and improve the visual quality. In CRA, the disparity vectors of stereoscopic images are estimated. The disparity compensated left view and simply enlarged right view are compared and conditionally selected for generating the enhanced right view. In order to implement CRA, a fast algorithm is strongly required because the disparity vectors need to be obtained at every layer and the complexity of CRA is quite high. In this paper, we adopted SDSP(Small Diamond Search Pattern) instead of full search and predicted the initial position of search pattern by examining the spatio-temporal correlation of disparity vectors and also suggested the SKIP mode to limit the number of processing units. The computer simulation showed that the proposed fast algorithm could greatly reduce the processing time while minimizing the quality degradation of reconstructed right view.

  • In this paper, we describe a novel method to generate an intermediate scene using BDM (Bidirectional Disparity Morphing) from the parallel stereopair. Because an image is composed of several layers and each layer has a similar disparity, it is available to use the block based disparity estimation. In order to prevent the false correspondence, however, we closely investigate the corresponding block as we adaptively vary the block size according to the estimation error. Therefore, we can detect the occlusion because of larger estimation error of the occluded region. We define three occluding patterns, which ate derived from the peculiar property of the disparity map, in order to smooth the computed disparity map. The filtered disparity map using these patterns presents that the false disparities ate well corrected and the boundary between foreground and background becomes sharper. As a result, we can improve the quality of the intermediate scenes.

  • The stationary image appears to move after we view a moving stimulus for a long time. The motion aftereffect(MAE) can spread to an adjacent region if there is no contrast discontinuity between two regions. In this study, it is investigated whether a phenomenon of MAE spreading to an adjacent non adapting area is affected by the depth discontinuity defined by binocular disparity. In the first experiment a disparity defined slanted pattern was presented in an unadapted region, and in the second experiment, a disparity defined pattern with a different depth was presented on the fronto-parallel plane. Although MAE duration in the condition with slanted pattern was not different from that in the non-slanted pattern condition, MAE durations in the pattern presented on pronto-parallel plane was vividly reduced, but not completely disappeared. These results suggest that a phenomenon of MAE spreading might be affected by depth discontinuity, and could be occurred after binocular information converges.

  • This paper proposes a new algorithm that generates the smooth and realistic transition views from one viewpoint to another on the multi-panorama based navigation system. The proposed algorithm is composed of two steps. One is prewarping that aligns the viewing directions of two panoramic images, and the other is the bidirectional disparity morphing(BDM) that generates the intermediate scene from the aligned panoramic images. For prewarping, we compute the phase correlation between two images in order to obtain the information, such as translation, rotation, and scaling. Then we align the viewing directions of two original images using these information. Afterprewarping, we compute the block based disparity vector(DV) and smooth them using two occluding patterns. As we apply these DVs to the BDM, we can generate the elaborate intermediate scene. We make an experiment on the proposed algorithm with some real panoramic images and obtain good quality intermediate scenes.
