  • Purpose: The aim of this paper is to investigate whether labor unions are the main determinants of advertising expenditures and whether market competition has an impact on the relation between labor unions and advertising expenditures, focusing on distribution firms. Research design, data, and methodology: Using 914 observations of KOSPI market from 2001 to 2009 in distribution firms, this paper examines whether labor union is related to advertising expenditures, focusing on distribution firms. For this, this paper employs not only OLS regressions method but also 2SLS regressions method in which Female_Ratio(percentage of female employees) is used as instrumental. Results: This paper finds that in the distribution firms, labor union, as a major stakeholder of the company is, in terms of statistic, negatively associated with advertising expenditures. Also, market competition, in this paper, doesn't have real impact on the relation between labor unions and advertising expenditures. Conclusions: This paper presents the influence of labor unions, as a major factor in determining advertising expenditures. An executive who understands that as the amount of advertising expenditure increases, the total pie of wages to be attributed to the members of labor union will decrease.

  • The debate surrounding advertising effectiveness is not to be overstated as a major source of advertising research. However, there is still a lack of discussion on the model for measuring the effects of government and public service advertising. This study focuses on this point and develops an index model that can evaluate government advertising. For this purpose, we conducted a survey of 800 respondents in 7 major cities. Based on the creativity evaluation factors (originality, clarity, and appropriateness) of government advertising and the evaluation factors (interest, avoidance, and relevance) of policy contents, a causal model that affects the cognition, attitude, and behavioral responses of the audience was set up. As a result of analysis, originality, clarity, interest, and relevance except for appropriateness and avoidance were meaningful variables for creating government advertising effect such as policy understanding, audience attitude, word of mouth intention of policy. In addition, policy understanding and audience attitude were the main mediating variable influencing the word of mouth intention of policy. Based on research results, this paper discussed the direction for creating effective government and public service advertising in the future.

  • Advertisements in modern era are not intended to be consumed only as commercial purposes, but consumed also as cultural and artistic purposes. Advertising contents' success depends on Semiotic codes revealed in advertising texts. Advertising scholar Ozoh (1998) argued that perspectives for advertising are divided into two perspective, one as marketing tool perspective and the other as communication processes perspective. Advertising planning, advertising management, advertising, and advertising evaluation of marketing perspective are significantly different from those of communication perspective. Two perspectives of advertising present various debates on what contents of advertising messages are and how advertising messages are made up. In this research manuscripts, we discuss story telling as communication tool of advertising text in terms of cultural semiotics. That is, meaning value of goods is so well revealed in use value of goods that they satisfy consumers' needs, we analyze how they satisfy consumers' needs in semiotic(symbolic) process. We apply Gremas's semantic model to coffee advertisements in France and Korea, and analyze various differences between differentiation strategies of French coffee advertisements and those of Korean coffee advertisements in terms of semiotic perspective.

  • For the success of the DMB market to meet consumers' demands for Ubiquitous Media and strengthen the nation's competitiveness, it's inevitable for us to activate DMB advertising as of main profit source for DMB Media, and to develop various types of DMB advertising which are linked to the profit model. So I'd like to look over the various types of DMB advertising which are suitable for DMB features as one of the efforts to activate DMB advertising. First of all, I've figured out what kinds of advertising are available for new media and which related technologies are required for DMB media. Through this research, I could find out what features of new media such as cable broadcasting, Internet and Mobile have become the source of developing various types of advertising and how to a great part to activate new media advertising markets by making the best use of their media features. This research also shows that DMB advertising has the high potential to be developed in various and effective types and kinds of advertising with its media feature and technological feature. This research observing DMB advertising cases showed that DMB advertising can be divided into 6 types such as forms, purposes, techniques, advertising positions, the use of LBS(Location Based Service), coupons and it could be developed into various kinds of DMB advertising dependent on each type. On the other hands, it would be great to have continual researches and follow-ups for various types of DMB advertising and the verification of the effectiveness for DMB advertising by performing potential DMB advertising.

Chapter III deals with the signification of the absence with introducing semiotic methods such as the theory of R. Barthes Chapter IV discusses the signification of the absence as an advertising creative talking into consideration of semiotic theories. And I categorize the types of the absence in advertising expressions. The absence is categorized into 5 types in this thesis. Type (1) is the absence of product which is supposed to be advertised, type (2) is the absence of product and make product image located out of main image of an advertising expression for introducing features of a product itself. And type (3) is the absence of the imaginary audience to invite an audience to participate more spontaneously. The signification of S types of the absence can be described on the basic of semiotic theories, especially the theory of R. Barthes. • Many pharmaceutical products are available through prescription (Rx) only status. As a result, access to physicians and insurance coverage play a key role in the use of these products, and therefore may affect the population to whom advertising is targeted at. The movement of pharmaceutical products from prescription (Rx) to Over-the-Counter (OTC), or Rx-to-OTC switch changes the cost of acquiring the drug and therefore may change the incentives manufacturers have at targeting particular population segments. This study examines whether Rx-to-OTC switch changes the frequency and the distribution of who is exposed to pharmaceutical advertising. Using an archive of pharmaceutical advertisements and National Consumer Survey, this study examines how individuals with particular demographic characteristics are exposed to pharmaceutical advertisements before and after drugs are moved from Rx to OTC. The results provide evidence that individual's advertising exposure increases after Rx-to-OTC switch. Moreover, the increase in advertising exposure is greater for the low socioeconomic status (SES) consumers which implies they may get more information about the disease, treatment and product after the Rx-to-OTC switch through advertising. If low SES consumers have more exposure to the advertising after products switched to OTC, then FDA policies regulating this switch should recognize the potential role of advertising providing access to health-related information.
