  • Previous literature has been investigated various aspects of accident occurrence and prevention in construction field. However, those studied were limited in that they only focused on the death accident without considering the loss time accident. Based on this, the goal of current study was to investigate the nature of the loss time accident, and compare the results with the death accident. Results showed that 1) the occurrence rate of death accident was significantly higher in the form work, temporary work, and steel frame work; 2) the temporary work showed significantly higher occurrence rate of the loss time accident and the death accident as compared to others; 3) ratio of the loss time accident to the death accident in domestic construction field was 50:1; 4) fall accident showed biggest occurrence rate in both the loss time accident and the death accident; and 5) more that 80% of workers in both the loss time accident and the death accident was between 41 and 65 years old.

  • Many industrial accidents have occurred continuously in the manufacturing industries, construction industries, and service industries of Korea. Fatal accidents have occurred most frequently in the construction industries of Korea. Especially, the trend analysis of the accident rate and fatal accident rate is very important in order to prevent industrial accidents in the construction industries systematically. This paper considers forecasting of the accident rate and fatal accident rate with static and dynamic time series analysis methods in the construction industries. Therefore, this paper describes the optimal accident rate and fatal accident rate by minimization of the sum of square errors (SSE) among regression analysis method (RAM), exponential smoothing method (ESM), double exponential smoothing method (DESM), auto-regressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model, proposed analytic function model (PAFM), and kalman filtering model (KFM) with existing accident data in construction industries. In this paper, microsoft foundation class (MFC) soft of Visual Studio 2008 was used to predict the accident rate and fatal accident rate. Zero Accident Program developed in this paper is defined as the predicted accident rate and fatal accident rate, the zero accident target time, and the zero accident time based on the achievement probability calculated rationally and practically. The minimum value for minimizing SSE in the construction industries was found in 0.1666 and 1.4579 in the accident rate and fatal accident rate, respectively. Accordingly, RAM and ARIMA model are ideally applied in the accident rate and fatal accident rate, respectively. Finally, the trend analysis of this paper provides decisive information in order to prevent industrial accidents in construction industries very systematically.

  • Accident analyses are used to identify common factors contributing to occupational accidents and to give recommendations for accident prevention. This study concerns with the accident characteristics and prevention in the telecommunication service industry. To investigate the accident characteristics, we used workers' compensation reports and employers' accident analysis reports. Three hundred and forty-five injury accidents which results in more than 4 days absence were surveyed. These data were used to investigate the accident characteristics in terms of company size, injured person's age, work experience, accident time, activity at time of accident, accident type, injured body part, and accident agency. We propose the accident prevention policy based on the accident characteristics. These results can be used to develop more effective occupational safety management policies in the telecommunication service industries.

  • This paper revisits the Fukushima accident to draw lessons in the aspect of nuclear safety considering the fact that the Fukushima accident resulted in core damage for three nuclear power plants simultaneously and that there is a high possibility of a failure of the integrity of reactor vessel and primary containment vessel. A brief review on the accident progression at Fukushima nuclear power plants is discussed to highlight the nature and characteristic of the event. As the severe accident management measures at the Fukushima Daiich nuclear power plants seem to be not fully effective, limitations of current severe accident management strategy are discussed to identify the areas for the potential improvements including core cooling strategy, containment venting, hydrogen control, depressurization of primary system, and proper indication of event progression. The gap between the Fukushima accident event progression and current understanding of severe accident phenomenology including the core damage, reactor vessel failure, containment failure, and hydrogen explosion are discussed. Adequacy of current safety goals are also discussed in view of the socio-economic impact of the Fukushima accident. As a conclusion, it is suggested that an investigation on a coherent integrated safety principle for the severe accident and development of innovative mitigation features is necessary for robust and resilient nuclear power system.

  • Traffic accident analysis is important to reduce the occurrence of the accidents. In this paper, we analyze the traffic accident with Apriori algorithm to find out an association rule of traffic accident in Korea. We first design the traffic accident analysis model, and then collect the traffic accidents data. We preprocessed the collected data and derived some new variables and attributes for analyzing. Next, we analyze based on statistical method and Apriori algorithm. The result shows that many large-scale accident has occurred by vans in daytime. Medium-scale accident has occurred more in day than nighttime, and by cars more than vans. Small-scale accident has occurred more in night time than day time, however, the numbers were similar. Also, car-human accident is more occurred than car-car accident in small-scale accident.

  • Forensic Engineering is the area covering the investigation of products, structures that fail to perform or do not function as intended, causing personal injury or damage to property. To investigate the mobile crane's overturn accident in terms of the forensic engineering, in this study, we identified the accident mobile crane's position and posture before accident by the analysis of the trace resulted by the contact between the outrigger and the ground, and the accident remodeling has been performed using CATIA modeling program in the basis of the accident mobile crane's position and posture information. The accident analysis has been performed by comparing this accident remodeling and the crane's specification, the table of the allowance load about the boom's length and the working radius. Through these studies, the safety accident that may occur in mobile crane can be minimized by performing specialized and systematic investigation of the accident cause in terms of the forensic engineering.

  • Occupational accident rate in Korea has occurred most frequently in the service industry, manufacturing industry, and construction industry. However, forestry, agriculture, and fishing are in a blind spot in policies of occupational safety and health because they are usually under 50 workers. So these industries are very important in order to prevent of industrial accidents because of poor safety management. Above all, accurate prediction of the occupational accident rate and fatal accident rate in the forestry is required to prevent the occupational accidents systematically and continuously. Therefore, this paper proposes very efficient policies for prevention of industrial accidents with these prediction results in the forestry. Also, this paper describes the optimal occupational accident rate and fatal accident rate by minimization of the sum of square errors (SSE) among regression analysis method (RAM), exponential smoothing method (ESM), double exponential smoothing method (DESM), auto-regressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model, proposed analytic function model (PAFM) by static method, and, kalman filtering model (KFM) by dynamic method with existing accident data in forestry. In this paper, microsoft foundation class (MFC) software of Visual Studio 2008 was used to minimize SSE of the occupational accident rate and the fatal accident rate. The minimum value of SSE in the forestry was found in 2.8822 and 6.0055 in the occupational accident rate and fatal accident rate, respectively. Accordingly, ARIMA model in the forestry are ideally applied in the accident rate and fatal accident rate. Finally, this paper provides very efficient strategic method in order to prevent the accident of forestry through the trend of determined prediction model and analysis of accident data.
