A Survey of Science Teachers, Perception and Attitudes on Disposal of School Laboratory Waste Water and Materials (환경 오염 및 과학 실험실 폐수와 폐기물 처리에 대한 과학 교사들의 인식과 태도 조사)

  • The purpose of this study was to survey science teachers, perception and attitudes on disposal of school laboratory waste water and materials. To fulfill this aim, a questionnaire was administered to 244 secondary school science teachers. The result of this study revealed that there was no large disparity in the degree of understanding of laboratory waste disposal and the laboratory waste water treatment, and in secondary science teachers' perception and practicing attitude on the environment. While science teachers had deep understanding of laboratory waste disposal and its influence on environmental pollution, they expressed less positive attitude toward the actual disposal of waste materials and waste water, and participation in teacher training. Therefore, it is necessary to provide standards of systematized disposal methods and proper disposal facilities in middle and high school laboratories, as well as to investigate teachers' needs before providing teacher training program.

A Study of School Waste Disposal Status and Its Reforms (Public Primary and Secondary Schools in Seoul) (학교 쓰레기 처리현황과 개선에 관한 연구 - 서울시 공립 초.중등학교를 대상으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study was to survey the trends of waste products in schools, its gathering and disposal, identification of problems and to analyze its disposal. Moreover, this study was aimed at basic suggestions about the establishment and plans of waste environmental education. 98 public primary and secondary schools were surveyed in Seoul during the month of March and April, 1991. Information was collected from each educational association by random sampling. Questionaries were used for this survey. To understand the disposal status of school waste and its reforms, this study surveyed the amount of waste by products, their origin and analyzed the disposal by type, one number of schools and teachers involved. The dump sited and disposal methods of school waste, its problems, and the status of school waste educations were researched, and ideal disposal methods and plans for waste education were suggested. The results were as follows. 1. The School's trash was produced by followings: paper, vinyle plastics, food, woods, metals, ceramics, glass, bottles, and ash from the heating system. The biggest cause of the school's waste as shown by the survey was a lack of environmental awareness(39.8%). The second biggest was the use of a one time use of disposable paper products(27.6%). 2. Waste collection by different grade levels were proven to be important but as you move from elementary to high school, the waste collecting operation decreased, in this connection between the students and waste collection itself it was significant on the other hand the teachers were not working as significant variables. 3. Of the school that collected waste 69.5 percent of the schools separately grouped common waste and recyclable waste. 25 schools(42.4%) received improvement on their environmental awareness of trash collection through this method. 4. From the number of disposal sites in surveyed schools, it was determined that the education of the necessity for separation of waste was performed in vain and accordingly the should require a real education in the future. 5. Regarding the method of disposal of waste the survey indicated that the #1 method of disposal was partial burning and the remains carried to a dump site by others(35,7%). In elementary schools the entire waste was taken by individuals to a dump site (33.3%). In high schools partial burning and then transported by individuals #1 in our survey(50%). 6. Relative to the problem of the treatment to waste, the emission of smoke from the burning was considered to be the #1 priority in our survey (62.3%) the problem of trash collection being delayed was 52.1%(1in our survey). 7. The present situation of environmental education of waste us lacking. Under present circumstances, the practice of public announcements for improvement and waste-paper collection has been going on vigorously but lacking in education as to the preparation of compositions for students the themes of public exhibitions, the organizing of voluntary associations should be part of the education system to reinforce student's awareness of proper waste disposal. 8. The most economical alternative for disposal was recycling usable waste or combustible material through a variety of education we can therefore educate students bring this education to their homes public servants will also be able to benefit in the waste disposal process with proper education. In conclusion we should intensify the systemical organization and the education of our waste disposal for a better environment.

Review Study of Radioactive Waste Classification and Waste Acceptance Criteria for Disposal of VLLW from Decommissioning of Nuclear Facilities (원자력시설 해체 시 극저준위방사성폐기물 처분을 위한 국내외 방사성폐기물 분류체계 및 인수기준에 대한 연구)

  • Waste acceptance criteria (WAC) for disposal of very low level waste (VLLW), which is generated in large quantities during decommissioning of nuclear facilities should be developed. For the WAC development, it is required to investigate current status to develop WAC for disposal of VLLW. The objective of the present study was to investigate radioactive waste classification and WAC for disposal of VLLW from decommissioning of nuclear facilities. Each country developed its own system for the classification of radioactive waste. Therefore, the classification system for radioactive waste in each country was analyzed to review its WAC of the radioactive waste, which is equivalent to the VLLW in the Korea waste classification system. The category of the VLLW in the waste classification systems of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the United Kingdom (UK) was similar to the category of the VLLW in the waste classification systems of Korea. For the United States(US), the category of Class A was similar to the VLLW in the Korea system. The IAEA provided the general guidance for the WAC based on the safety assessment of disposal system. The US and the UK developed the WAC based on national radioactive waste disposal policy and characteristics of disposal facilities and radioactive waste in addition to the IAEA general guidance. Therefore, the WAC for disposal of VLLW in Korea should be developed by considering the national radioactive waste disposal policy, characteristics of disposal facilities, and the IAEA guidance. This study results will contribute to establishment of national management system of radioactive waste.

The Effect of Waste Disposal Volume on Earnings Management Behavior in the Construction Waste Disposal Industry - Focused on the Size of the Licensed Storage Capacity and the Location of the Waste Disposal Site - (건설폐기물 기업의 폐기물처리량이 이익조정에 미치는 영향 - 허용보관량 규모와 폐기물처리장 소재지를 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyse whether the waste disposal volume level in the construction waste disposal industry makes a different effect on earnings management behaviour by size of the licensed storage capacity and by location of the waste disposal site. The empirical results of this study are as follows. First, the waste disposal volume significantly influences earnings management behavior. When it comes to the size of licensed storage capacity in the small-sized capacity firms, the smaller waste disposal volume firms make more aggressive earnings management by using discretionary accruals. On the other hand, in the large-sized capacity firms, more waste disposal volume firms report higher earnings by adjusting more discretionary accruals. Second, the effects of waste disposal volume on the earnings management show different pattern depending on the location of waste disposal site. When the firms are located in the non-capital regions, the smaller waste disposal volume firms report higher earnings by adjusting discretionary accruals as well as by using real activities earnings management. However, the firms located in the capital regions show more aggressive earnings management when they have higher waste disposal volume level.

  • In this paper, we discuss the experiences during the preparation of the Wolsong Low- and Intermediate-Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Center. These experiences have importance as a first implementation for the national LILW disposal facility in the Republic of Korea. As for the progress, it relates to the area of selected disposal site, the disposal site characteristics, waste characteristics of the disposal facility, safety assessment, and licensing process. During these experiences, we also discuss the necessity for new organization and change for a radioactive waste management system. Further effort for the safe management of radioactive waste needs to be pursued.

A Case Study for Site Selection of the Waste Treatment Facilities (폐기물처리시설 입지선정에 따른 사례연구)

  • This study is to investigate the present condition of waste disposal establishment and to analysis problems which could be produced at location selection formalities of waste disposal establishment. It proposed building methods of waste disposal establishment to lead spontaneous participation of local resident according to case analysis of waste disposal establishment. There are research results; i) Opposition of inhabitants was the majority of reason at the business abandonment or delay of waste disposal establishment. Therefore agreement formation course with local inhabitants is most important position. ii) Many estimate have been needed for waste disposal establishment, but support estimate of government was 30-50% that is really low compare with other environmental establishment. So that it need to increase of government estimate. iii) Location collection is carried out based on law and final collected location must be executed without delay of relation business as soon as possible. iv) Standard of location collection has to divide into small, middle and large size and to apply with same rule according to divided location. v) It must be change public subscription before and location selection after and maintain continuance of information offer to local inhabitants and offered information. vi) after building of waste disposal establishment for solving distrust of waste disposal establishment. It must be planed and carried on useful support countermeasure to local inhabitants in actuality.

  • In this paper, we reviewed briefly about the barrier materials for the radioactive waste disposal. The primary concept of the radioactive waste disposal is safety. The goal of the radioactive waste management is to assure that the environment is not adversely affected and also public. There are a wide variety of materials are available for the radioactive waste disposal or storage. Among those coal fly ash is one of the significant materials are used as a barrier material. Here we reported, the Calcium sulfo aluminate (CSA) from coal fly ash is effectively suitable for the radioactive waste disposal. This is one of the ways of utilization of waste and manufactured the valuable materials for future indeeds.
