  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between nutrients and phytoplankton. This study was done by the comparison to two costal areas Mokpo, which inflow fresh water, and Wando. In August, salinity of the sea water decreased by 3.5-4.5%o in Mokpo coastal area, but was not nearly decreased in Wando coastal area. This suggests a lot of fresh water inflow in Mokpo coastal area. DIN and DIP were decreased by water temperature increasing in Wando. However, in Mokpo, DIN and DIP were increased greatly during the summer season. Nitrogen was limited to a 10 NIP ratio especially during the summer season in Wando coastal area while phosphorus in Mokpo coastal area was limited with over 28 N/P ratio in all the seasons. Coefficient of determination$(r^2)$ between DIP and Chl.-a was 0.91 in Mokpo coastal area. On the other hand, Coefficient of determination$(r^2)$ between Chl.-a and DIN, DIP were 0.93 and 0.89, respectively, in Wando coastal area. These results suggest DIP in Mokpo and DIN and DIP in Wando might be limited at the increase of phytoplankton.

  • $\beta$-Sialon powder was prepared from Wando pyrophyllite by the carbothermic reduction and nitridation at 135$0^{\circ}C$ for 10 h nitrogen atmosphere. Amorphous silica prepared from Si(OC2H5)4 was added to Wando pyrophyllite powder in order to control the final Z value. Two different methods were applied for synthesis of $\beta$-sialon powders. In Process A, the amorphous silica prepared from Si(OC2H5)4 was admixed to Wando pyrophyllite powder. Process B was started from the mixture of Wando Y2O3 was added to the synthesized $\beta$-Sialon powders as a sintering aid, and the mixed powders were hot pressed at 175$0^{\circ}C$ for 120 min in nitrogen atmosphere under 30 MPa. Their mechanical properties were compared. The maximum values of M.O.R., hardness and KIC were 667 MPa, 16 GPa and 6.3 MN/m3/2, respectively, and they are the values obtained form $\beta$-Sialon ceramics prepared by process A of Z=0.5.

  • Productivity of Saccharina japonica was evaluated by water layers in Gijang and Wando sea area to find the suitable farming areas for mass production of biomass. For this, S. japonica was cultivated at various depths (0.5, 1, 2, 3 m), respectively. As the result, the growths in Gijang were 225.1-261.5 cm in length, 18.5-21.3 cm in widths, 396.0-537.7 g in weights, 14.3-17.8 kg/cluster in biomass, and those in Wando were 332.0-435.7 cm in lengths, 24.6-32.5 cm in widths, 766.0-1,232.9 g in weights, 16.4-24.3 kg/cluster in biomass. It showed that the growths of blades in Wando were faster than those in Gijang. The growth rates of blades by the depths were faster at 0.5-1 m depth from January to June. After June, however, as the growth rates of blades were lower than the shedding rates of blades, it showed that the growth of S. japonica decreased at all depth conditions except 2 m depth. Productivity of S. japonica was better in Wando which is lower in the water temperature and nutrients than Gijang.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the leading price between Jeju and Wando's oliver flounder producer price and to analyze the dynamic effect of the regional producer price using the panel VAR model. In the process of analysis, it was confirmed that there are unit roots in the monthly data of Jeju and Wando's oliver flounder producer price. So, in order to avoid spurious regression, the rate change of producer price which carries out log difference was used in the analysis. As a result of the analysis, first, the panel Granger causality test showed that the influence of the change rate of producer price in oliver flounder in Jeju was slightly larger than that in Wando, but it was found that each region all leads the change rate of the producer price in oliver flounder. Second, the panel VAR estimation showed that the rate change of producer price in Jeju and Wando a month ago had a statistically significant effect on the change rate of producer price of each region. Third, the impulse response analysis indicated that other regions are affected a little more than the same region in case of the occurrence of the impact on the error terms of the change rate of produce price in Jeju and Wando oliver flounder. Fourth, the variance decomposition analysis showed that the change rate of producer price in the two regions was higher explained by Jeju compared to Wando. In conclusion, it is expected that the above results can not only be useful as basic data for the stabilization of oliver flounder producer price and the establishment of policies for easing volatility but can also help the oliver flounder industry operate its business.

  • There are many island areas in Jeonnam Province and various plants are naturally grown due to their regional characteristics. Among them 217species were found to be Rare-Specialty plants in Jonnam Province. There are growing 35 species of Critically Endangered(CR), 37 species of Endangered Species(EN), 54 species of Vulnerable(VU) and 36 species of Least Concern(LC), many of which are native to islands far south or western of the sea. • $eta$-Sialon synthesis was investigated via the simulataneous reduction and nitriding of Wando pyrophyllite. When Wando pyrophyllite-graphite-$Si_3N_4$ seed mixture was heated at 135$0^{\circ}C$ for as long as 10 hours in 80% $N_2$-20%$H_2$ atomsphere $eta$-$Si_3N_4$ solid solution was mainly formed together with a small amount of $\alpha$-$Si_3N_4$ The value z of the forming $Si_{6-x}Al_2O_2N{8-z}$ was decreased with heating time.

  • This study aims to analyze causality among Wando abalone producer prices by size using a vector autoregressive model to expiscate the leading-price of Wando abalone in various price classes by size per kg. This study, using an analytical approach, applies a unit-root test for stability of data, a Granger causality test to learn about interaction among price classes by size for Wando abalone, and a vector autoregressive model to estimate the statistical impact among t-1 variables used in the model. As a result of our leading-price analysis of Wando abalone producer prices by shell size using a VAR model, first, DF, PP, and KPSS tests showed that the Wando abalone monthly price change rate by size differentiated by logarithm were stable. Second, the Granger causality relationship analysis showed that the price change rate for big size abalone weakly led the price change rate for the small and medium sizes of abalone. Third, the vector autoregressive model showed that three price change rates of t-1 period variables statistically, significantly impacted price change rates of own size and other sizes in t period. Fourth, the impulse response analysis indicated that the impulse responses of structural shocks for price change rate for big size abalone was relatively more powerful in its own size and in other sizes than shocks emanating from other sizes. Fifth, the variance decomposition analysis indicated that the price change rate for big size abalone was relatively more influential than the price change rates for medium and small size abalone.

  • Thirty one morphometric characters of striped field mice(Apodemus agrarius) from eight localities in Korea were analyzed by multivariate methods in order to confirm taxonomic status of specimens from Wando island. Two subgroups were recognized: a small-size form from six localities (Mt. Taebaek, Mt. Weolak, Cheongju, Mt. Chiri, Kunsan, and Jin isoland) and a large-size form from Wando island and Cheju island. It is confirmed that the small-size form from six localities is A. a. coreae, as described by Thomas(1908), and that the large-size form from Cheju island is A. a. chejuensis, as named by Johnson and Jones (1955). Furthermore, it is confirmed that large-size specimens from Wando island is and Cheju island. It is confirmed that the small-size form from six localities is A. a coreae, as described by Thomas(1908), and that the large-size form from Cheju island is A. a. chejuensis, as named by Johnson and Jones(1955). Furthermore, it is confirmed that large-size specimens from Wando island is subspecies A. a. chejuensis, as suggested by koh (1989). In future, analyses with specimens from islands in southern coasts are necessary to clarify the taxonomic status of Apodemus agrarius in Korea.
