  • This paper presents a prototype of high resolution 3D display with a new principle. We have proposed a new 3D display which has the features of both Integral Imaging (II) and volumetric display. The proposed display consists of two lens arrays and a thin volumetric display. When the viewer watches a thin volumetric display through two lens array, he can perceive a thick 3D image. In other words the two lens arrays can play a role of a convex lens which has a large diameter as a amplification of a depth. The advantage of the proposed display is that it has higher resolution than II and it is smaller than volumetric display with a large convex lens. In this paper, we show a detail of a prototype 3D display. We took various errors into consideration when we simulated 3D display and we found suitable lenses parameter from the simulation result. Then we confirm that the prototype will be able to reconstruct 3D images.

Single DLP Optical Engine for Solid Volumetric True 3D Display

  • According to depth cues of an image, the optical engine of the solid volumetric true 3D display can project a sequence of slices of a 2D image to corresponding display at a set of liquid shutters (LC) locating at different depth. A single DLP optical engine developed for a solid volumetric true 3D display consists of a lamp, reflector, color wheel, hollow integrator, relays, DMD, and projection lens. The simulation results show that the optical engine designed for single DLP volumetric true 3D display satisfies the requirements.

  • Developing from stereoscopic to autostereoscopic, researchers on display technology are trying to provide more depth cues to viewer, leading to the advent of true 3D display. Volumetric 3D displays seem to be practical technology at present. Ultimate display will function like human vision system, with characteristics of providing all depth cues and free interaction.

  • A volumetric 3D display system based on a rotating two dimensional color LED array is set up. It has a cylinder display space ${\Phi}800{\times}640mm3$ which is composed of 256 slices of pictures in one 3D image with each slice $320{\times}256$ LED pixels. The volumetric image has 4 gray scales and 64 colors. The main structure and working principle of the system is described in detail.

  • Volumetric display has many applications recently in education, 3D movie, medical images but these applications have several problems that need to be overcome. Volumetric display may process a amount of visual data and design the high efficient vision system for realtime display. The stereo data for volumetric display estimated the disparity vectors from the stereoscopic sequences has been transmitted the disparity vectors, motion vectors and residual images with the reference images, and the stereoscopic sequences have been reconstructed at the receiver for 3D display. Central issue for efficient 3D display lies in selecting an appropriate stereo matching with robust vision system. In this paper, high efficient vision system is proposed for efficient stereo image matching and the experimental results represent high efficiency for proposed 3D display system.

So central issue for the design of efficient volumetric image system lies in selecting an appropriate stereo matching and robust vision system. In this paper, we proposed high efficient vision system, which design vision stage with rotating and moving horizontally, and match the successive stereo image efficiently. In experimental results with volumetric image system, the proposed method represents high efficiency with minimizing error and low computational load for volumetric display.

  • By defining a uniform reference point array corresponding to the 3D voxel array and abandoning voxels whose deviations from their respective reference points exceed a given tolerance, the distribution of voxels within the volumetric 3D image space gets uniform, effects of non-uniform distribution upon the image reconstructing are eased.

In case of stereo system for volumetric display, disparity vectors from the stereoscopic sequences and residual images with the reference images has been transmitted, and the reconstructed stereoscopic sequences have been displayed at the receiver. So central issue for the design of efficient volumetric vision system lies in selecting an appropriate stereo matching and robust vision system. In this paper, we propose high efficient vision system with the reduction of rectification error which can perform the 3D data extraction efficiently with low computational complexity. In experimental results with proposed vision system, the proposed method can perform the 3D data extraction efficiently with reducing rectification error and low computational complexity.

  • To make real 3D vision available, we have established a volumetric 3D display system that based on rotating LED matrix. The paper introduced a method to correct the problem that pixels are not symmetrical but circumferential in space, which causes the resolution of the edge area much lower than that of the central area.

  • A volumetric three-dimensional (3D) display system was presented, which utilizes a rotating two-dimensional (2D) display panel of light emitting diodes (LEDs) to generate more than 10 million volume pixels (voxels) within a cylindrical volume of 165 mm in height and 292 mm in diameter. Due to persistence of vision, momentarily addressed voxel information is perceived and fused into a 3D image. Important cues for depth perception, such as binocular parallax, accommodation, convergence and motion parallax are satisfied automatically and naturally, thus it is suitable for individual or group viewing, without the need for any special visual aids.
