The research findings are as follows: 1) the frequency of library visits of University K was on the high side, 2) the primary purpose of using the academic library was associated with learning or reading, therefore, the most used library spaces were related to that, 3) the most used library materials were 'general books', the most unused were 'reference books', 4) the most preferred way to obtain needed materials when failing to find wanted materials was 'Contact librarian'. A similar phenomenon occurred in terms of facility use, 5) university K's users were usually satisfied with the loan policy, 6) the rate of users who don't know whether there is user education was very high, the rate of users who have no experience with user education was extremely low. These research findings can be referenced by library management to improve libraries' service quality and take advantage of complex spatial configurations.

  • Educational changes of library and information science (L & IS) at Keio university in Japan, standard of L & IS established by Japanese university educational committee, and trend of library science education in three Korean university were comparatively studied. For the efficient conduct of investigation, the art of states of L & IS was also considered. By the influence of American education, public library-oriented Japanese curriculum had changed to special library-oriented curriculum. Late 60's information science was introduced to their curriculum, library science which based upon information science theory endeavor to make its own field in a n.0, pplied science as harmonized library and information science now. Korean library science education begun with university library-oriented curriculum, accepted special library and information science at almost same time in late 60's. • Korean university libraries are increasing their library collection each year according to the standard set by the Ministry of Education. The standard states that all the university libraries are required to keep 3 books for newly enrolling students, 30 books for each enrolled student and 5, 000 books for each department. The increasing number of the university library collection brings many problems in the libraries. 1. The size of the library collection is not related to the satisfaction of the library user's requests. The satisfaction is usually related to number of the new publications received in the library. Z. The Korean publication is limited to a small number. It could not meet the university standard. Therefore, the number is filled with the foreign publications. But the use of them is not frequent. Even the number of the domestic and foreign new publications together could not meet all the requests of the university library users. Only cooperation with other libraries will be able to meet most of the diversified requests. 3. Most of the present library collection are not likely to be used in the future and they should be eventually discarded. Present library administration put too much emphasis on the size of library collection and only the aquisition of the material is main concern of the university librarians. They need to consider other factors in the aquistion of the library collection. They should make their collection development in accordance with user's requests in addition to meet the university standard.

  • "Jonkyongkak" which King, Sungjong of Yi dynasty established within Sungkyunkwan in 1475 is regarded as the first university library in Korea. On the basis of modern librarianship, however, it is desirable to recognize the fact that Keijo Imperial University Library is really the first university library in Korea. In this thesis, an attempt to study the Korean university libraries under the period of Japanese control is provided. Keijo Imperial University Library is the key institution in this study. This study will focus to review the following facts: 1) the historical background of Keijo. Imperial University Library; 2) the organization and staffing pattern, and budget of this library; 3) the acquisition policy and basic collection development plan of this library; 4) the library and other services of this library including readers services; 5) the relationship with other private college libraries; and 6) the impact of this library on the present Seoul National University Library. The followings are the outlined conclusions: 1. Japanese Government had established Keijo Imperial University Library in order to perform the colonial education policy of Korean peninsula. Furthermore, it was one of the import supporting agencies for the research activities which were necessary for Japan to govern the Southeast Asia including Korean Peninsula 2. The organization and staffing size and pattern of this library are much below to those of modern university libraries. They are somewhat below to the level which is necessary to perform the minimum basic library functions. 3. The priorities of book collection of this library are 1) humanities and social sciences especially, materials on Law are much emphasized; 2) pure sciences and 3) technologies and agriculture. Therefore, the quantity of the materials on the field of technology and agriculture is very small. 4. The acquisition policies of this library are deeply influenced by the Japanese Government's colonial policy of Korean peninsula and her aggressive policy of Chinese Continent. 5. The major contribution of this library to the present Seoul National University Library is the transfer of 550,000 volumes of books and library building, but this building is now removed according to the transfer of Seoul National University Campus. 6. The staffing pattern of this library was, however, much ahead of that times. Especially, the facts that professional librarians were eligible to be appointed as the director of this library, and they had the faculty membership including faculty rank should be highly appreciated.

  • This study is to analyze correlations between 14 factors related to university libraries and the number of professional staff, nonprofessional staff, and total library staff. The results of this study are summarized as follows: 1. In the case of 1992, there are high positive correlations between the number of library staff and 10 of 14 variables : the number of undergraduate enrollments, graduate enrollments, departments, faculty members, school employees and volumes in library, size of library building, total university expenditure and library materials expenditure (coefficient: 0.70-0.99). However, there are little significant correlations between the number of library staff and 2 variables : library open hours and university expenditure per student. Among the above factors, the correlations of the total university expenditure and the library expenditure show a significant difference more than ones of the other factors. 2. In the case of the analysis by 3 years interval in 1984-1992, there are high positive correlations between the number of total library employees and 7 of the above 9 variables, excepted to library open hours and 4 factors related to expenditure (coefficient : 0.73-0.93 in 1984;0.77-0.88 in 1988;0.70-0-92 in 1992). But there are little significant differences among the correlation coefficients by each year. 3. In the results of the correlation analysis between the professional staff and the nonprofessional staff, the number of graduate enrollments, departments, volumes in library and school employees, library expenditure and total university expenditure show higher positive correlation to the professional staff than the nonprofessional staff. However, the number of undergraduate enrollments, faculty members, volumes added in library and volumes loaned, size of library building and library materials expenditure show little significant differences in the correlation coefficients between the professional staff and the nonprofessionalstaff.
