The increased level of glucose, ketone bodies, non-esterified fatty acids and lactate in blood, decrease of glycogen content, phosphofructokinase activities and glucokinase activity and the increased level of glucose-6-phosphatase activity in the liver of streptozotocin injected rats were significantly moderated by ginseng saponin administration. It is not likely, however, that the hypoglycomic action of ginseng saponin might be due to their direct action on enzyme activities, since the saponin effect of servers enzymes in vitro was not enough to explain such an appreciable hypoglycemic activity of the saponin in streptozotocin induced diabetic rats, for which much work have to be done.

Blood glucose and total lipid levels in rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes were determined after intraperitoneal administration of methanolic extract of Ixeris dentat whole plants and its main component, cynaroside (=luteolin 7-O--$\beta$-D-glucoside). From the data obtained, it was concluded that intraperitoneal administration of the methanolic extract produced a significant hypoglycemic effect. Total blood lipids were also decreased. Cynaroside in the streptozotocin-diabetic rats failed to exhibit hypoglycemic effect but a significant hypolipemic activity was observed. Thus, it is suggested that this methanolic extract may contain one or more hypoglycemic and hypolipemic principles including the main flavone glucoside, cynaroside, which can significantly reduce the levels triglyceride and total cholesterol in streptozotocin-diabetic rats.

This study was to investigate the effects of maternal diabetes on the lung tissue of the fetal rat using lectin histochemistry and electron microscope technique. Maternal diabetes was induced by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (75 mg/kg the body weight) into pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats on the 7th day of gestation. Fetuses of streptozotocin induced diabetic rats exhibited delayed lung maturation and reduced air space. In lectin histochemistry, the binding of Maclura pomifera (MPA) to fetal lungs from diabetic mothers was reduced, but no significant changes in the bindings of Concanavalin A (Con A), Wheat germ agglutinin (WGA), Ricinus communis I (RCA I) and Griffonia simplicifolia (GSI-$B_4$) were noted. Because the MPA has affinity to terminal N-acetyl-D-galactosamine residues constantly linked O-glycosidically to serine or threonine, the present findings may indicates that maternal diabetes interfere with the processes of O-linked glycosylation in fetal rat lung.

Hypoglycemic effect of hematoxylin was observed in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats, of which plasma insulin levels were not affected. Investigation of hypoglycemic mechanism showed that hematoxylin stimulated glucose oxidation and glycogen synthesis in soleus muscle from diabetic rats in both basal and insulin stimulated state.

The effectsof garlic vinegar supplementation on body weight, blood blucose, and plasma triglyceride and cholesterol were investigated in streptozotocin -induced diabetic rats fed high-cholesterol(1%) diet for 4 wk. The garlic vinegar was made by fermenting 20% frsh garlic juice. There was no effect of garlic vinegar on body weight, plasma glucose or triglyceride concentrations in the diabetic rats. Plasma total -cholesterol concentrations were unaffected by garlic vinegarr supplementation. However, plasma LDL-cholesterol concentrations and atherogenic index were significantly lower in the diabetic rats supplemented with garlic vinegar diet than tin the cotnrol rats. The diabetic-rats supplemented with garlic vinegar not only had increased HDL-cholesterol levels but had decreased LDL-cholesterol. This alteration in the HDL/LDL-cholesterol ratio in the diabetic rats may decrease the risk of atheroscelrosis. Therefore, the over-all effect of garlic vinegar supplement may contribute to the antiatherogenic role in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.

Hypoglycemic efficacy of natural functional mixture(FM) and level of the diabete related hormones in streptozotocin(STZ)-induced diabetic rats were investigated. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into three groups (normal, diabetic fed diets with/without FM). Supplement of FM did not affect the body weight and feed intake of STZ-induced diabetic rats. The increase in the weight of liver of STZ-induced diabetic rats was weakened by supplement of FM, whereas the weight of kidney and heart was not affected. Blood glucose level was slightly, and glucose tolerance of post-feeding was significantly improved by functional mixture. The mixture significantly reduced the elevated HbA1C level of diabetic rats by 15%, and it increased the level of insulin and C-peptide in blood and decreased glucagon level. Therefore, we conclude that FM in this study has a potency of prevention and treatment of diabetes mellitus.

To evaluate the hypoglycemic effect of nano powder propolis, streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rats were divided into 2 groups : diabetic control group and nano powder propolis (0.9ml) group. Then the rats were fed with nano-powder-propolis for 4 weeks. After 4 weeks, oral glucose tolerance test (oral GTT) was performed and blood sugar levels after 16 hours fasting, body weights, and blood lipid levels were measured. Finally, pancreas were collected and examined by histopathology and immunohistochemistry. In conclusion, the nano-powder-propolis was effective in the treatment of diabetes due to the reduction of blood sugar level and the regeneration of damaged ${\beta}$-cells observed in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.

This study investigated the effect of Phellodendri Cortex extract on hyperglycemia and diabetic nephropathy in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into normal control (NC), diabetic control (DC), and diabetic treatment with Phellodendri Cortex extract (DP). Over a 4-week experimental period, Phellodendri Cortex extract was administered orally at 379 mg/kg BW/day. The final fasting serum glucose level, urine total protein level, and relative left kidney weight in the DP group were significantly lower than the DC group. Renal XO and SOD activities in the DP group were significantly lower than the DC group and renal CAT activity in the DP group was significantly higher than the DC group. Tubular epithelial change was reduced in the DP group compared to the DC group. These results indicated that Phellodendri Cortex can reduce glucose level and prevent or retard the development of diabetic nephropathy in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.

This study was done to investigate the antioxidative effect of polygoni radix in Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Diabetes was induced by intravenous injection of STZ at a dose of 45 mg/kg dissolved in citrate buffer. The ethanol extract of Polygoni radix was orally administrated once a day for 7 days. The contents of Total cholesterol, triglyceride (TG) were significantly decreased in Polygoni radix treated STZ-sample group compared with to the those of STZ-control group. The hepatic cytosolic activities of glutathione-s-transferase (GST), superoxide dismutase (SOD) were significantly increased, Also the content of glutathione (GSH) was incresaed in Polygoni radix treated STZ-sample group compared with to the those of STZ-control group. but the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) and the hepatic cytosolic activity of Catalase (CAT) were decreaed but not statistical significant. These results indicated that ethanol extract of polygoni radix was effective for the antidxidative in the STZ-induced diabetic rats.

This present study was carried out to investigate the effect of Saengjingamrotang and Saengjingamrotang plus Radix Trichosanthis in streptozotocin induced hyperglycemic rats. Body weight, serum levels of glucose insulin total cholesterol triglyceride and urine levels of volume glucose protein were measured in streptozotocin induced hyperglycemic rats orally receiving extracts of Saengjingamrotang and Saengjingamrotang plus Radix Trichosanthis for 4 days. According to above mentioned results, Saengjingamrotang and Saengjingamrotang plus Radix Trichosanthis have the effect of decreased blood sugar, serum lipid levels and urine volume, protein, glucose in streptozotocin induced hyperglycemic rats, and so they were expected to be appled to the treatment of diabetes mellitus.
