  • Objectives: This study identified the factors associated with successful smoking cessation for 6 months at a smoking-cessation clinic of a public health center in an urban area. Methods: The subjects of this study were 670 visitors to the smoking cessation clinic of Dongjak-Gu public health center in Seoul, from September 6, 2005 to March 24, 2006. The 274 visitors of them responded to the questionnaire with registration, which contained the information related to the study except that of registered card for the clinic. A dependent variable was success or failure in smoking cessation during the 6 month-smoking cessation program, measured the status of smoking cessation in each week by self-report. Independent variable included demographic information, the characteristics in using the clinic, health status and smoking related behaviour, exposure to other smokers in daily life and motivation. Multiple logistic regression model was used to find the factors associated with success of smoking cessation. Results: The success rate in smoking cessation for 6 months was 33.6%. Five pretreatment characteristics were identified as univariate predictors of continuous abstinence. Finally, age, job, and practice oriented motivation were associated significantly with the success of smoking cessation for 6 months from a multiple logistic regression analysis. The lower socio-economic smokers such as people having lower literacy level, lower income people, unskilled workers, and recipients by Medical Assistant Program were more likely to fail in continuous abstinence for 6 months. Conclusions: In order to increase the success rate in smoking cessation clinics of public centers, counselors should activate self confidence and practice oriented motivation of participants for smoking cessation.

To explain the health behavior for smoking and smoking cessation programs, the behavioral model was constructed. The model is composed of five-stages such as recognition of the program, past exprience, present smoking status, intention for smoking, and behavioral intention for cessation programs. It is results that there were very low recognition and and purchase rates for most of smoking cessation programs. Evidenced-based and effective smoking cessation progrms need to be encouraged to smokers by medical doctors, and the strategies of eucationm public realtions, and advertisement are recommended. In addition, cotinuing legal and systematic supports for smoking cessation would lower the smoking rate and ultimately ontribute to the nation;s health promotion, Recognitionm Behavioral Intention.

  • Purpose: Health care professionals represent an immediately available resource to promote smoking cessation. However, the content in smoking cessation intervention courses in most institutions is insufficiently covered due to the limited number of class hours. The purpose of this study was to develop a comprehensive tobacco cessation-web-based, multimedia, educational program for a range of medical professionals. Methods: Based on Jung's Teaching and Learning Structure Plan Model, a development process was proposed comprising four stages: (1) analysis, (2) planning, (3) production, and (4) operation/evaluation. The effectiveness of the program was tested using quasi-experimental design, and the participants in experimental group were required to complete the program. Changes in the level of knowledge and attitude were measured. Results: The educational program developed includes nine topics and 26 sub-topics. A total of 180 storyboards, 15 videos, and 27 pictures were made. After the education, the level of knowledge was significantly increased in the experimental group. Conclusion: This web-based program can be recommended as a potential medium for health care professionals to use in counseling smoking cessation. The study findings also indicated that the program may be either offered as a teaching aid or utilized concurrently with lectures for students studying health care-related topics.

The overall smoking cessation rate of the smokers enrolled in inpatient smoking cessation school was 60%. The age of starting smoking and the kind of occupation have a significant difference between the success group and failure group of smoking cessation. • The purpose of this study was to examine factors relating intention of smoking cessation intervention among nursing students. The participants were 214 nursing students among two universities in B city and Y city. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data. Data were analyzed with t-test, Pearson's correlation and multiple regression by using SPSS 23.0 program. The significant factors relating intention of smoking cessation intervention were self-efficacy of smoking cessation intervention (${\beta}=.634$ p<.001), attitude of smoking cessation intervention (${\beta}=.191$, p=.002), and beliefs of health benefits of smoking cessation (${\beta}=.132$, p=.032). And these factors explained 65.2% of the variance in nursing students' intention to implement smoking cessation intervention. In conclusion, self-efficacy of smoking cessation intervention, attitude of smoking cessation intervention and beliefs of health benefits of smoking cessation had a significant positive influence on the intention to delivery smoking cessation intervention among nursing students. These finding can be used to develop evidence-based smoking cessation intervention training program for nursing students.
