The Study of Development and Calibration for the Real Scale Fire Test Facility (실대형화재평가장치의 개발 및 안정화에 관한 연구)

  • The reduced scale fire test provides basic data but it is not enough to analysis real fire problem directly because there is no exact analogy theory between a real fire and the reduced scale model. Therefore, we have developed the 10 MW large scale calorimeter in order to real scale fire test. This advanced large scale calorimeter used for physical properties such as a heat release rate, based upon consumption of $O_2$ method. Using the heptane pool fire, we carried out the calibration in order to evaluation for heat release rate. It is approve that this facility has the reliability and it is capable of applying to the advance fire research in the future.

  • This study was intended to conduct a Real-scale fire test to predict the fire behavior by unit space at the apartment building where a huge casualties and injuries are likely. After setting the inflammables inside the house, the test aimed to identify the fire characteristics to each unit item was carried out. The house was divided into 4 unit space such as kitchen, living room, bedroom and a study for a real scale fire test. As a result, bedroom reached to flashover state in 5minutes after setting the fire, indicating a rapid fire growth such as 7433.3kW of maximum thermal emissivity, 578.6ppm of carbon monoxide, 1.25ppm of carbon dioxide and $1,350^{\circ}C$ of maximum indoor temperature. Particularly, the fire growth was made up to critical temperature which might cause a severe damage to the people within 3minutes, if the fire were not extinguished at inflammable space at the early stage of fire, which stressed the need of early response. The result of a real scale fire test could be compared with the outcome of expanded simulation test and used in predicting the fire spread at the space for different use.

  • In this study, reduced-scale experiments as the alternative to a real-scale fire test were conducted to understand fire properties in atrium space. The scaling laws were derived from $\pi$-parameters which were deduced by dimensional analysis of governing equations (continuity, conservation of momentum and conservation energy). The 1/50 scale experiment simulated the real-scale fire test in SIVANS atrium at Japan were conducted under the scaling laws. And this results were compared with real-scale experiment results. Furthermore these results were visualized by video recording system using laser light sheet.

  • This study is analyze the damage of warehouse fire accident be made through the fire characteristic database of combustibles and real scale fire test of warehouse mock-up. Combustibles fire tests are carried out for database using RCT (Room Corner Tester) to predict fire growth the goods. A mockup ($3m{\times}3m{\times}2.4m$) of clothes warehouse was built and real scale fire test by LSC (Large Scale Calorimeter) base on the fire characteristic DB. The mock-up of clothes warehouse is made of two type sandwich panels (Glass wool, EPS foam sandwich panel). As a mock-up test result, test 1 (Glass wool sandwich panel) and test 2 (EPS foam sandwich panel) indicating fire growth such as 5 MW, 11 MW of maximum HRR (Heat Release Rate).

  • In this study, we looked into the method to establish fire growth rate by buildings use for growing fire at the beginning of a fire considering the characteristics of the combustibles in a performance-based design. Actual conditions survey and literature review were carried out for the fire load and exposed surface area of combustibles to establish design fire by domestic building use. As a results, a simplified prediction equation of fire growth rate which depends on fire load and weight of combustibles could be derived by calculating the relation between the fire load and the fire growth rate of an initial fire through investigation of combustibles by domestic building use.Also, as a result of analyzing the placement of combustibles and location of the ignition source, it was found that the influence of the materials of the combustibles and the materials of the combustibles adjacent to the ignition source is big. Though 4 different experiments were carried out for the evaluation, the result of comparing the findings with those of FGR model showed that the fire growth rate was similarly derived.

  • This study aims to validate predictive capabilities of FDS for the pool fire in three rooms connected to ventilation network. The three rooms in real scale fire test facility are configured to be similar to that of nuclear power plant in size, ventilation condition, construction material, etc. Basically three rooms are confined to the other area except two open doors and two ventilation duct in each room. The real scale fire test was conducted with these conditions and the predictive capabilities of FDS will be validated by comparing FDS simulation results with experimental data from the temperature, heat flux, and concentration point of view. This study concludes that temperature from FDS is about 25 % lower deviation from the experiment, and heat flux from FDS is about 5% deviation.

  • The combustion characteristics of roof 'Jucsim' structure was analysed using real scale fire test on wooden structure heritage building. the fire test model was made to consider roof timberling internal structure for a Sunglemun. Structure of test body layed lime, soil, 'Jucsin' and ceiling board excepting roof tile to find heat propagation process by setting thermocouples. The first test to find fire growth and heat propagation process in the part of ceiling. The second test organized to find the efficiency of fire proof paint between ceiling board and inside of Jucsim structure. The third test try to get the performance level of fire proof fabric with the same manner. The result showed from the test proof the heavy smoke exposure with limited effect of fire proof paint however, reliable fire resistance effect showed in case of fire proof fabric.

A study on the vehicle fire property using the large scale calorimeter (대형칼로리미터를 이용한 차량 화재 특성에 관한 연구)

Using this large scale calorimeter, we cameo out the real scale vehicle fire test in order to evaluation for heat release rate. We obtained the calculated result for HRR $2.3{\sim}3.4\;MW$ and this result is very similar to the PIARC candidate HRR. It is approve that this facility has the reliability and it is capable of applying to the advance fire research in the future.
