  • The aim of this study was to identify the female nurses' perception of the types and characteristics of male nurses using Q-methodology, which can explore human subjectivity. The 35 selected Q-statements from each of 35 subjects were classified into a normal distribution using a 9 point scale. The collected data was analyzed using the PC-QUANL program. Principal Component Analysis identified 3 types of perception toward male nurses. Type 1 was classified as 'development-oriented support type', Type 2 was classified as 'realistic critical type', and Type 3 was classified as 'conservative acceptance type'. The consensus of opinion in each type was 'Male nurses are under stress due to the unique characteristics of a female-dominated workplace'. These results will contribute to the perception improvement of female nurses toward male nurses by developing arbitration programs based on the three types.

  • This paper presented analysis on the perception by Korean restaurant employees of Korean royal cuisine. Classification using a subjective research method called Q methodology was performed on perceptions of Korean restaurant employees about Korean royal cuisine. This paper derived four types of perceptions. First type (pursuit of tradition) emphasized traditions of royal cuisine, i.e. cooking method and spacious menu-setting on the table. The second type (pursuit of refinement) stressed the importance of "atmosphere and luxuriousness of Korean restaurants and sophistication of royal cuisine, as well as the improvement of interior and exterior environments of Korean restaurants serving royal cuisine. The third type (pursuit of fundamentals) focused on fundamentals of royal cuisine itself such as raw materials, sincere effort, historical meaning, appropriate prices, etc. The last type (pursuit of health) valued a nutritionally balanced diet rather than taste itself. This study provides more specific positioning strategy based on the characteristics of each of the four classifications for the status of Korean restaurants.

  • The purpose of this study was to analysis of the image of elementary school teachers on special class. The Q-methodology was used as a research method which is useful for analyzing subjectivity like as human value, attitude, belief and image. P-sample as subjects of this study was collected from 40 elementary school teacher in Busan. A data was analyzed using QUANL PC program. As a result of research, the image of elementary school teachers on special class was classified as 4 type. The 1 type was labeled the practical proponent type. The 1 type teachers highly estimate the educational importance of the special class and thought it as a place that educational possibility of children with disabilities can come true. The 2 type was labeled the passive bystander type. They are quite indifferent to the special class, and are skeptical about the educational achievement of children with disabilities. The 3 type was labeled the ideational positive type. They admit the importance of the special class, but thought that the image about the special class highly depends on the ability of the teachers who take responsibility for it. The 4 type was labeled the realistic opponent. They criticize the special class for not being the place that inclusion education for children with disabilities comes true and they are dissatisfied with the fact that ordered-curriculum for children with disabilities isn't applied at all.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify types and characteristics of anger expression in clinical nurses. Methods: Q methodology was used to analyze each individual participant's subjectivity on anger expression. A total of forty clinical nurses arranged 32 pre-selected Q statement cards on a 9 point scale, shaping the cards' pile into a normal distribution. Then the data from the arranged cards were analyzed using the QUANL PC Program. Results: Three types of anger expression were identified; 'reasonably overcoming', 'emotionally expressing', and 'internally mitigating' including both positive and negative aspects. Conclusion: Adequate strategies to resolve anger in clinical nurses needs to be developed according to anger expression types.

  • Asthma is one of the most common chronic disease of childhood. Although an improved understanding of the pathophysiology of asthma has had a positive impact on the treatment and management of the disease, there has been a gradual but significant increase in asthma mortality. Also, mother's caring type is the essential factor in management of the child with asthma. The purpose of this study is to identify and understand the caring patterns of mathers of children with Athma by Q methodology. As a research method, 35 Q-statements were collected through individual interviews and review of related literatures. 37 subjects were interviewed and the data were analyzed by the PC QUANL program with principal component analysis. The were 3 different caring types classified as follows : Type I was the therapeutic compliance obeying type, compliancing medication and preventing cold etc. Type II was the physical strengthening type, taking Chinese medicine and folk remedy etc. Type III was the environment control type, managing house and environment clearly and ventilating room air etc. Therefore, it needs considering above each type in nursing care of the family and children with asthma.

  • This study investigated characteristics and types of ideal maternal behaviors in three different cultures : Korea, the United States, and France. The 18 experts from each of the 3 cultures who participated in this study had knowledge and experience related to infant development and parenting. Based on the principles of Q-methodology, the experts sorted 40 Q-items representing maternal behavior related to infancy. After rating each item on a scale from "least desirable" to "most desirable" maternal behaviors, the experts described their reasons for the classification. Results identified some clear similarities and differences among cultures. pooled responses yielded 3 types of ideal maternal behaviors: perfective, child centered, and realistic perspective.

  • Purpose: Nowadays nursing is facing a constantly increasing shortage of employees. While there are many causes for the present nursing shortage, a major contributing factor is the revolution in fundamental values what we expect in life. An understanding of the change can assist in identifying interventions that can be used to address this crisis in healthcare. The purpose of this study is to identify the features they look for in work and the underlying factors of the work values domain. Methods: Using Q methodology, 37 nurses rated 34 selected Q-statements on a scale of 1-9. The collected data were analyzed using pc-QUNAL software. Results: The results showed that work values, which nurses indicate as most important through working, were perceived as 4 factors; 'compensation oriented', 'security oriented', 'professional role oriented' and 'freedom oriented' work value. Conclusion: Providing for these findings will result in greater job satisfaction among nurses, better nurse retention and enhanced patient care within a supportive and harmonious organization.

Method: The Q-methodology, which provides a method of analyzing the subjectivity of each item, was used. The 34 selected Q-statements from each of 41 subjects were classified into a shape of normal distribution using a 9 point scale. The collected data was analyzed using a QUANL PC program. Result: Four types of perception of happiness in Korean undergraduate nursing students were identified. Type I is a family support vs. emotion type, Type II is a self satisfaction vs. perception type, Type III is a relation oriented vs. action type, and Type IV is a self regulation vs. belief type. Conclusion: It can be concluded that obtaining happiness by pursuing a satisfactory life through creation of values can play an important role in happiness. Therefore, the results of this study suggest that the concept of happiness might be included in nursing curriculum.

  • A study which develops a controller design methodology that has flexibility of eigenstructure assignment within the stability-robustness contraints of LQR is requried and has been performed. The previously developd control design methodology, namely, EALQR(Eigenstructure Assignment/LQR) has better performance than that of conventional LQR or eigenstructure assignment but has a constraint for the weitgting matrix in LQR, which could be indefinite for high-order system. In this paper, the effects of the indefinite Q in EALQR on the frequency domain properties are analyzed. The robustness criterion and quantitative frequency domain properties are also resented. Finally, the frequency domain properties of EALQR has been analyzed by applying to a flight control system design example.
