Effects of Package Materials on Quality Change of Pine Bud Beverage Under Ultraviolet Light

  • The effects of packaging materials on preserving the functional component of pine bud beverage stored under UV (ultraviolet) light exposure conditions were studied. The order of UV light blocking properties of the selected packages was: opaque can> opaque PET (polyethylene terepthalate) with green lamination=transparent PET with 10% PEN (polyethylene naphthalate) blending> transparent PET, and did not depend on film thickness in specified range. At 20${^{\circ}C}$, the order of preserving degree of original color and endobornyl acetate, which is quality index of pine bud beverage, was the same as above. Exposure to UV light can cause of deterioration of functional food components, but green color lamination and blending of PEN materials with transparent PET help to preserve the UV sensitive pine bud beverage components. However, the treated PET bottles have poorer preservation capabilities than the opaque cans. Transparent PET with PEN blending, in particular, will be very useful packaging material for colorful functional beverage preservation by helping to protect the ingredients while attracting consumer attention.

  • 폴리아릴레이트(polyarylate, PAR) 섬유의 산 처리와 자외선 조사 처리에 의한 섬유표면의 미세구조 변화를 SEM과 AFM을 통하여 살펴보고 RMS roughness로 분석하였으며, 접촉각 측정을 하였다. 또한, PAR 섬유의 표면개질이 폴리에틸렌 나프탈레이트(polyethylene naphthalate, PEN) 수지와의 계면접착력에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 섬유 풀-아웃 시험(Fiber Pull-out)을 통해 분석하였다. 산처리 농도와 자외선 조사 처리 시간이 증가함에 따라 PAR 섬유의 표면에 에칭이나 크랙이 발생하면서 표면의 거칠기가 증가하는 양상을 보였으며, 물에 대한 접촉각은 감소하는 결과를 보였다. PEN 수지와의 계면접착력을 분석한 결과, 산 처리 농도의 증가와 자외선 조사처리 시간이 경과에 따라 증가하였고 특히, 산 처리 농도 pH 3, 자외선 조사 처리시간이 24 h일 때 최대 계면접착력을 보였다. 이는 섬유표면조도의 증가에 따른 섬유 표면적의 증가로, 계면에서 상호작용할 수 있는 면적이 증가하기 때문이라고 볼 수 있다.

Water vapor barrier properties of polymer-like amorphous carbon deposited polyethylene naphthalate film

  • Polymer-like amorphous carbon films were deposited on polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) substrate by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) and their water vapor transmission rates (WVTR) were tested. propane was used as precursors. To make a polymer-like amorphous carbon film the deposition rate, surface roughness, light transmittance, and WVTR of the films were characterized as a function of the precursor feed ratio and plasma power. The water vapor transmission rates of bare PEN film and single layer PAC on PEN substrate were 6.95 g/m2/day and 0.3 g/m2/day, respectively. The superior property the water vapor permeability of thin layers of PAC was attributed to uniform coverage and good adhesion between PAC film and PEN substrate.

Studies on the Ternary Blends of Liquid Crystalline Polymer and Polyesters

  • Thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer made up of poly(p-hydroxybenzoate) (PHB)-poly(ethylene terephthalate)(PET) 8/2 copolyester, poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate) (PEN) and PET were mechanically blended to pursue the liquid crystalline phase of ternary blends. Complex viscosities of blends decreased with increasing temperature and PHB content. DSC thermal analysis indicated that glass transition temperature (Tg) and melting temperature (Tm) of blends increased with increasing PHB content. Both tensile strength and initial modulus increased with raising PHB content and take-up speed of monofilaments. In the WAXS diagram, only PEN crystal reflection at 2Θ=$15.5^{\circ}C$ appeared but PET crystal reflection was not shown in all compositions. The degree of transesterification and randomness of blends increased with blending time but sequential length of both PEN and PET segment decreased.

알곤 이온빔 입사각에 따른 Polyethylene Naphthalate 필름 표면의 자가나노구조화 분석 (Effect of Argon Ion Beam Incident Angle on Self-Organized Nanostructure on the Surface of Polyethylene Naphthalate Film)

  • Ion beam irradiation induces self-organization of nanostructure on the surface of polymer film. We show that the incident angle of Ar ions on polyethylene naphthalate(PEN) film changes self-organized nanostructure. PEN film was irradiated by argon ion beams with the ion incident angle of 0°, 30°, 45°, 60°, and 80°. Nanostructure was altered from dimple to ripple structure as the angle increases. The ripple structure changed to pillar structure after 60°due to that the shallow incident angle increased the ion energy transfer per depth up to 50 eV/Å, which value could induce excessive surface heating and oligomer formation reacting as a physical mask for anisotropic etching. And quantitative analysis of the nanostructures was adapted by using ABC model and fractal dimension theory.

  • PEN (Polyethylene 2,6-dicarboxyl naphthalate)은 PET와 화학적 구조가 유사한 polyester 이다. PEN은 PET 의 benzene ring 대신 naphthalene ring이 있는 구조로서 rigid 한 구조를 바탕으로 PET 보다 훨씬 우수한 기계적 물성과 기체 차단성 및 전기 절연성을 가지고 있기 때문에, 현재 PEN에 대해서는 많은 연구가 진행되었고, 상업용으로도 생산되고 있다. 현재까지 진행된 PEN에 대한 연구 중 X-ray를 이용한 배향 거동에 대한 연구보고는 많았으나, 아직까지 FTIR-ATR 을 통해서 시료의 Machine Direction (MD), Transverse Direction (TD), Normal Direction (ND)의 세 방향으로 필름의 3차원적 분자 배향의 거동에 대한 연구보고는 없다. Reflective Thermochromic Display on Polyethylene Naphthalate Film

  • A reflective flexible display was fabricated by placing a thermochromic pigment on a polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) substrate coated with an indium tin oxide (ITO) film, and its thermo-optical characteristics were investigated. The reflective thermochromic display showed good image quality with a reflectance of approximately 65%. As a flexible display, the display showed reliability without damage to the image even after the display was bent strongly. The reflective display cell exhibits continuously the gray level according to the temperature controlled by applied voltage. This low cost display is expected be used in outdoor poster applications where information needs to be presented clearly.
