  • Lots of semi-active control devices have been developed in recent years because they have the best features of passive and active system. Especially, controllable magneto-rheological(MR) fluid devices have received significant attention in these area of research. The MR fluid is the material that reversibly changes from a free-flowing, linear viscous fluid to a semisolid with a controllable yield strength in milliseconds when exposed to a magnetic field. If the magnetic field is induced by moving a permanent magnet instead of applying current to a solenoid, it is possible to design a MR damper consuming low power because the power consumption is reduced at steady state. This paper proposes valve mode MR damper using permanent magnetic circuit that has wide range of operation with low power consumption and small size. To design a MR damper that has a large maximum dissipating torque and a low damping coefficient, a design parameter is adopted. The magnetic circuit, material of choke and choke type are selected experimentally with the design parameter. The behaviors of the damper are examined and torque tracking control using PID feedback controller is performed for step, ramp and sinusoidal trajectories.

  • In this paper, the MR fluid damper to the application of the paramagnetic (paramagnetic) particles dispersed in the MR fluid inside the magnet current caused by the MR damper using the principles of the internal fluid delivery yield stress variation is characterized in Silky. In other words, the current strength of the MR fluid damper according to the internal friction coefficient varies phenomenon is to use. The MR fluid damper to control the MCU that you want to use Microchip's dsPIC chips, and current control in order to improve performance by using the PWM and UART communication to an external monitor to monitor the entire system was designed. In this study using MR fluid dampers and dsPIC chip dehydration process happens when a washing machine vibration and noise, vibration and noise reduction sikidorok washing machine protection systems are proposed.

  • This paper presents ride comfort characteristics of a quarter-vehicle magneto-rheological (MR) suspension system with respect to different tire pressure. As a first step, controllable MR damper is designed and modeled based on both the optimized damping force levels and mechanical dimensions required for a commercial full-size passenger vehicle. Then, a quarter-vehicle suspension system consisting of sprung mass, spring, tire and the MR damper is constructed. After deriving the equations of the motion for the proposed quarter-vehicle MR suspension system, vertical tire stiffness with respect to different tire pressure is experimentally identified. The skyhook controller is then implemented for the realization of the quarter-vehicle MR suspension system. Finally, the ride comfort analysis with respect to different tire pressure is undertaken in time domain. In addition, a comparative result between controlled and uncontrolled is provided by presenting vertical RMS displacement.

  • In this paper, the performance of a toggle brace-MR damper system is evaluated for the control of the structure excited by earthquake load and the non-linearity of the toggle system is investigated. Considering that the control force of MR damper described by Bingham model is a function of velocity, velocity amplification factor by the toggle brace system is calculated and the effect of toggle configuration on the amplification factor is also evaluated. Numerical results show that the control performance can be largely enhanced using toggle brace system especially for the case that the MR damper installed with conventional brace system such as Chevron and diagonal cannot provide enough control force under severe earthquake load.

  • The vibration control performance of a semi-active damper connected to adjacent buildings subjected to seismic loads was investigated. The MR damper was used as a semi-active control device. A fuzzy logic control algorithm was used for effective control of the adjacent buildings connected to the MR damper. In the buildings control coupled with a MR damper, the response reduction of one building results in an increase in the response in another building. Because of these conflict characteristics, multi-objective optimization is required. Therefore, a fuzzy logic control algorithm for the control of a MR damper was optimized using a multi-objective genetic algorithm. Based on numerical analyses, the semi-active fuzzy control of MR damper for adjacent coupled buildings can provide good control performance.

  • The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the performance of an MR fluid damper for seismic vibration control of a structure in terms of equivalent linear damping based on linearization technique and to experimentally verify the results from linearization technique by comparing them to those from system identification testing of a building structure with the MR damper. First, among various models for the MR damper, the equivalent damping is estimated for the Bingham model which is mathematically simple. Second, the transfer function of a building structure with the MR damper is obtained by performing shaking table tests and the damping matrices of the structure are constructed using the modal information obtained by the transfer function. It is observed that the damping mathematically estimated using linearization technique for the Bingham model matches well with the damping coefficient experimentally obtained by system identification.

  • Most washing machines are now produced as a drum-type, where a washing drum mounted on a suspension system with springs and dampers, to minimize the transmittance of the vibration from the drum to the frame. A low-cost MR damper, using magneto-rheological fluids, can produce variable damping forces by changing the current values in the magnetic coil. Experimental results show the comparison of the vibration attenuation performances between two different dampers. One test set-up uses a passive damper and another one uses a MR fluid damper. The test results showed that the vibration amplitude of the washing machine with the MR damper is much smaller than the case with the passive damper.

  • This research describes the development model and testing of a hybrid damper which can be applicable to a vehicle suspension. The hybrid damper is devised to improve the performance of a conventional passive oil damper using a magneto-rheological (MR) accumulator which consists of a gas accumulator and a MR device. The level of damping is continuously variable by the means of control in the applied current in a MR device fitted to a floating piston which separates the gas and the oil chamber. A simple MR device is used to resist the movement of floating piston. At first a mathematical model which describes all flows within the conventional oil damper is formulated, and then a small MR device is also devised and adopted to a mathematical model to characterize the performance of the device.

  • The purpose of this paper is to experimentally identify the finite element (FE) model of a building structure with magnetorheological (MR) fluid damper. Using FE model based system identification (FEBSI) technique, The model of MR damper having nonlinear characteristics is expressed with equivalent linear properties such as mass, stiffness, and damping. Bingham model is used for MR damper modeling. The equivalent stiffness and damping matrices of MR damper are predicted by applying an equivalent linearization technique, and those values are compared with the experimentally obtained ones.

  • This paper presents yaw vibration control performances of railway vehicle featuring controllable magnetorheological damper. A cylindrical type of MR damper is devised and its damping force is evaluated by considering fluid resistance and MR effect. Design parameters are determined to achieve desired damping force level. The MR damper model is then incorporated with the governing equations of motion of the railway vehicle which includes vehicle body, bogie and wheel-set. Subsequently, computer simulation of vibration control via proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller is performed using Matlab. Various control performances are demonstrated under external excitation by creep force between wheel and rail.
