Recently emotional relationships between industrial products and user experience are getting more attention than ever. However, current user interface design has focused just on the mechanical and logical aspects. This research proposed a new approach to improve user's emotional experience to interface design and introduced storytelling as a new possibility. Four types of user interface - logical interface, picture added interface, storytelling-applied interface, and storytelling-applied interface with a story script - were used for this research. Eighty college students participated in this research. Each participant was randomly assigned to one of four types of user interfaces. Additionally, their individual differences in affect intensity were measured. he results show that users reported more emotional experience in the storytelling-applied interface and storytelling-applied interface with a story script than the logical interface and just picture added interface. The results also suggest that the higher satisfaction was experienced for the storytelling-applied interface. And all those results are differentiated by the users' affect intensity. The users who have higher affect intensity expressed heavier emotional experience and deeper satisfaction for the storytelling-applied interface.

A novel method for non-matching interfaces on the boundaries of the finite elements in partitioned domains is presented by introducing interface elements in this paper. The interface element method (IEM) satisfies the continuity conditions exactly through interfaces without recourse to the Lagrange multiplier technique. The moving least square (MLS) approximation in the present study is implemented to construct the shape functions of the interface elements. Alignment of the boundaries of sub-domains in the MLS approximation and integration domains provides a consistent numerical integration due to one form of rational functions in an integration domain. The compatibility of displacements on the boundaries of the finite elements and the interface elements is always preserved in this method, and the completeness of the shape functions of the interface elements guarantees the convergence of numerical solutions. The numerical examples show that the interface element method is a useful tool for the analysis of a partitioned system and for a global-local analysis.

Computing environments are being more and more various due to the development of technologies. While existing computing environments used for fixed locations or particular purposes by requesting big scale monitors or complicate calculation performance, recent computing environments are used for a variety of locations and for a diversity of purposes by using various devices. Because of the needs, digital device convergence, which emphases portability and mobility, came out. However, almost researches for user interface are performed for big scale monitors or complicate calculation performance until now. By the reason, user interface on each small device is different from others, or is not appropriate for the purpose of small device. Therefore, this research is to design Zoomable User Interface (ZUI) that adapts for small devices by adding the existing user interface on small devices and haptic technologies, and to implement a user interface for PDA devices.

Offering of different attractive opportunities by different wireless technologies trends the convergence of heterogeneous networks for the future wireless communication system. To make a seamless handover among the heterogeneous networks, the optimization of the power consumption, and optimal selection of interface are the challenging issues. The access of multi interfaces simultaneously reduces the handover latency and data loss in heterogeneous handover. The mobile node (MN) maintains one interface connection while other interface is used for handover process. However, it causes much battery power consumption. In this paper we propose an efficient interface selection scheme including interface selection algorithms, interface selection procedures considering battery power consumption and user mobility with other existing parameters for overlaying networks. We also propose a priority based network selection scheme according to the service types. MN‘s battery power level, provision of QoS/QoE and our proposed priority parameters are considered as more important parameters for our interface selection algorithm. The performances of the proposed scheme are verified using numerical analysis.

The interface-states between the top silicon layer and buried oxide layer of nano-SOI substrate were developed. Also, the effects of thermal treatment processes on the interface-state distributions were investigated for the first time by using pseudo-MOSFETs. We found that the interface-state distributions were strongly influenced by the thermal treatment processes. The interface-states were generated by the rapid thermal annealing (RTA) process. Increasing the RTA temperature over $800^{\circ}C$, the interface-state density considerably increased. Especially, a peak of interface-states distribution that contributes a hump phenomenon of subthreshold curve in the inversion mode operation of pseudo-MOSFETs was observed at the conduction band side of the energy gap, hut it was not observed in the accumulation mode operation. On the other hand, the increased interface-state density by the RTA process was effectively reduced by the relatively low temperature annealing process in a conventional thermal annealing (CTA) process.

In order to understand the shear mechanical properties of the interface between clay and structure and better serve the practical engineering projects, it is critical to conduct shear tests on the clay-structure interface. In this work, the direct shear test of clay-concrete slab with different joint roughness coefficient (JRC) of the interface and different normal stress is performed in the laboratory. Our experimental results show that (1) shear strength of the interface between clay and structure is greatly affected by the change of normal stress under the same condition of JRC and shear stress of the interface gradually increases with increasing normal stress; (2) there is a critical value JRC_cr in the roughness coefficient of the interface; (3) the relationship between shear strength and normal stress can be described by the Mohr Coulomb failure criterion, and the cohesion and friction angle of the interface under different roughness conditions can be calculated accordingly. We find that there also exists a critical value JRC_cr for cohesion and the cohesion of the interface increases first and then decreases as JRC increases. Moreover, the friction angle of the interface fluctuates with the change of JRC and it is always smaller than the internal friction angle of clay used in this experiment; (4) the failure type of the interface of the clay-concrete slab is type I sliding failure and does not change with varying JRC when the normal stress is small enough. When the normal stress increases to a certain extent, the failure type of the interface will gradually change from shear failure to type II sliding failure with the increment of JRC.

This paper discusses the user interface for content selection with a video-on-demand system. We suggest two modes for the selection process: active and passive. This paper analyses various video intensive user interfaces using logs of user operation to understand how users behave in each mode.

In this paper, a DEVS(Discrete EVent Systems Specification)-HLA(High Level Architecture) interface was developed in order to perform the simulation using the combined discrete event and discrete time simulation model architecture in a distributed environment. The developed interface connects the combined simulation model with the HLA/RTI(Run-Time Infrastructure) which is an international standard middleware for distributed simulation. The interface consists of an interface model, a model interpreter, and a distributed environment interpreter. The interface model was defined by using the combined simulation architecture in order to easily connect the existing combined simulation model without modification with the HLA/RTI. The model interpreter takes charge of data transmission between the interface model and the combined simulation model. The distributed environment interpreter takes charge of data transmission between the interface model and the HLA/RTI. To evaluate the applicability of the developed interface, it was applied to the diving simulation of a submarine in a distributed environment. The result shows that a simulation result in a distributed environment using the interface is the same to the result in a single computing environment.

A boundary integral equation method in the shape design sensitivity analysis is developed for the elasticity problems with axisymmetric non-homogeneous bodies. Functionals involving displacements and tractions at the zonal interface are considered. Sensitivity formula in terms of the interface shape variation is then derived by taking derivative of the boundary integral identity. Adjoint problem is defined such that displacement and traction discontinuity is imposed at the interface. Analytic example for a compound cylinder is taken to show the validity of the derived sensitivity formula. In the numerical implementation, solutions at the interface for the primal and adjoint system are used for the sensitivity. While the BEM is a natural tool for the solution, more generalization should be made since it should handle the jump conditions at the interface. Accuracy of the sensitivity is evaluated numerically by the same compound cylinder problem. The endosseous implant-bone interface problem is considered next as a practical application, in which the stress value is of great importance for successful osseointegration at the interface. As a preliminary step, a simple model with tapered cylinder is considered in this paper. Numerical accuracy is shown to be excellent which promises that the method can be used as an efficient and reliable tool in the optimization procedure for the implant design. Though only the axisymmetric problem is considered here, the method can be applied to general elasticity problems having interface.
