A Study on Health-Promoting Behavior of Mid-Life Women (중년기 여성의 건강증진행위에 관한 연구)

  • This study was undertaken to identify the health-promoting behavior and to explore the relationship between health-promoting behavior, self-efficacy, self-esteem and climacteric symptoms among the middle-aged women. The subjects for this study were 101 women and data were obtained using a self-reported questionnaires. The Questionnaire was composed of a health promotion life styles profile, self-efficacy scale, self-esteem scale, and, climacteric symtoms check-list. Data was analyzed by the SAS program using ANOVA, Pearson correlation and stepwise multiple reggression. The results are summarized as follows : 1. The scores on the health-promoting behavior scale ranged from 46 to 114 with a mean score of 77.95(SD=12.99). 2. The scores on the health-promoting behavior of housewives was significantly higher than working women. 3. Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that : 1) self-esteem was the main predictor and accounted for 21.75% of the total variance in health-promoting behavior 2) Self-esteem, climacteric symptoms and health-promoting behavior were contributors to quality of life. 4. In the relationship between variables, self-esteem was positively corelated with health-promoting behavior and negatively with climacteric symptoms. In conclusion, self-esteem, age and occupation were important variables in health-promoting behavior. The results of this study can be used for the management of health in middle aged women to Increase their quality of life of them.

The Relationship between Resourcefulness and Health Promoting Behavior of High School Girls (여고생의 자원동원성과 건강증진행위에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: The Purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between resourcefulness and the health promoting behavior of high school girls. Methods: The subjects of this study consisted of 117 high school girls on S girls' high school. The data was analyzed with the SPSS computer program that includes descriptive statistics, mean, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis. Results: The mean age of subjects was 18.0 years old. The mean score of resourcefulness was 114.2. The most frequently practiced resourcefulness item was "By changing my way of thinking, I am often able to change my feelings about almost anything". The next most frequently practiced resourcefulness item was "My self-esteem increases when I am able to overcome a bad habit". There was no difference in the degree of resourcefulness with respect to the general characteristics. The mean score of health promoting behavior was 115.2. The group whose concerns over health was shown high health promoting behavior. The health education class group was shown high health promoting behavior. There was statistically significant positive correlation between resourcefulness and health promoting behavior of high school girls. Conclusion: The findings of this study provides promising evidence to construct further studies on the increasing health promoting behavior programs relating to high school girls. To increase health promoting behavior for high school girls, it is necessary to continue or possibly expand on existing health education programs.

A Study on Health Promotion Behavior in Elderly People (노인의 건강증진행위 정도와 영향요인)

  • Purpose: This study focused on identifying health promotion behavior of older adults, and factors affecting this behavior. Method: The participants in this survey analysis were Koreans aged 65 or over who had the ability to communicate and could do cognitive thinking, and who consented to participate in the survey. The survey questionnaire included items on demographic characteristics, level of depression, social support, activities of daily living, self-efficacy, and health promotion behavior. Data were analyzed using the SPSS Windows 14.0 program. Results: There were significant differences in health promotion behavior according to religion, economy and health status. Levels of depression, social support and self-efficacy had strong correlations with health promotion behavior. The factors that had the greatest effect on health promotion behavior were social support and self-efficacy. Conclusion: As social support and self-efficacy have been found to affect health promotion behavior in older adults, programs developed to enhance health of older adults should include activities to enhance both social support and self-efficacy.

Health Literacy and Health Behavior Compliance in Patients with Coronary Artery Disease (관상동맥질환자의 건강정보이해능력과 건강행위이행)

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify the levels of and the related factors to health literacy and health behavior compliance in patients with coronary artery disease. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with a convenience sample of 121 hospitalized patients with coronary artery disease. The structured questionnaires were used to measure the levels of health literacy and health behavior compliance. Results: The average linguistic health literacy score was $32.23{\pm}21.46$, the functional health literacy score was $6.51{\pm}5.08$, and the health behavior compliance score was $61.66{\pm}15.53$. The levels of education (${\beta}$=.35), income (${\beta}$=.27), and perceived health status (${\beta}$=.21) were found significant, explaining 41.8% of the variance in linguistic health literacy. The levels of education (${\beta}$=.23), income (${\beta}$=.27), age (${\beta}$=-.24), and family support (${\beta}$=.22) were found to be significant, explaining 50.9% of the variance in functional health literacy. The levels of education (${\beta}$=.27), family support (${\beta}$=.20), and linguistic health literacy (${\beta}$=.40) were found to be the significant factors, which explained 45.1% of the variance in health behavior compliance. Linguistic health literacy specifically explained 9.5% of health behavior compliance. Conclusion: Health literacy was associated with health behavior compliance, influencing the factors of health behavior compliance. These findings suggest that the interventions for improving health literacy are necessary to enhance health behavior compliance in patients with coronary artery disease.

The Relationships among Economic Status, Health Status and Health Promotion Behavior in School-age Children (일 지역 초등학생이 지각한 경제상태와 건강상태 및 건강증진 행위와의 관계)

  • Purpose: To identify the relationship among economic status, health status and health promotion behavior in school-aged children. Methods: Data was collected from 308 fifth-grade children in Seoul. The instruments used were the self-reported questionnaires on economic status by McLoyd, health status by Shin, and health promotion behavior by Ki. Data was analyzed by SPSS WIN 12.0 program, using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficient. Results: Economic status and health status were negatively correlated (r=-.30), as were economic status and health promotion behavior (r=-.26). The relationship between Health status and health promotion behavior were positively correlated (r=.20). Health promotion behavior was significantly related with sex. father's education, mother's education and school record. Conclusions: These results suggested that health status and health promotion behavior in school-age children are affected by economic status.

A Study on the Performance of Health Promoting Behavior in College Students (대학생의 건강증진 행위에 관한 연구)

  • This study has been done for the purpose of identifying performance of health promoting behavior and the variables affecting health promoting behavior in college students. 350 college students at D university in P city were chosen by cluster sampling. The data were collected by questionnaire from December 4 to December 20, 1996. The instruments used for this study included health promoting lifestyle, self-esteem, health locus of control and perceived health status. The data were analyzed by use of mean, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression. The results are summarized as follows; 1. The average item score for the health promoting behavior was low at 2.49. In the sub-categories, the highest degree of performance was , 2.99, and the lowest degree was , 1.43. 2. There was no statistically significant difference between the mean for health promoting behavior of the female, 2.49 and that of the male, 2.48(t=-0.3664, p=.7143). But there was statistically significant difference among the mean for health promoting behavior classified by grade(F=3.67, p=.0126). 3. Performance of health promoting behavior was positively correlated with and , and negatively correlated with and . 4. The Related Factors on the Health Promotion Behavior of Primary School Students (초등학생의 건강증진행위 실천에 영향을 미치는 요인 - 초등학교 6학년을 중심으로 -)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to find out how well the primary school students are practicing the health promotion behaviors and the factors relating their health promotion behavior. Methods: This study was carried out by using questionnaires with 1,215 students attending at a 6th grade, 16 primary schools which arranged the school health teachers in Kyoungpook, Chilkok Gun from the 21th through 22th of December 2004. Among them, 1,189 were included in final analysis. The collected data was analyzed through frequency, percentage mean and standard deviation, multiple regression. Results: According to the data from multiple regression of analysis which has the health promotion behavior practice as a subordinate variable, in male students' case the degree of health promotion behavior practice becomes high in proportion to their parents' interest in health, to their perceived self efficacy, and in case of the barriers of the health promotion behavior practice. As to the female students, their health behavior practice becomes high in proportion to their parents' interest in health. It also becomes high in proportion to the perceived health status, the understanding of the importance of the health, internal health locus of control in personality, the perceived self efficacy and the perceived benefit of the health promotion behavior. But in case of the barriers of the health promotion behavior, it was the same as the male students' case. Conclusions: As the results of study, it showed that the knowledge to importance of health, the self efficacy, the knowledge of benefit of health promotion behaviors and the health concern to the children of the parents were related to health promotion behaviors of the primary school students. So, through the systematic development of health education program, we induced to desirable direction for the changeable factors of actions to health promotion for the health, and through the connective guidelines between the School and the Home, we have to adapt to effective health promotion program for the health management of the young boys and girls.

Health Behavior and Health Knowledge of Elementary School Student Related to Parent's Socio-Economic Status (초등학생의 건강생활실천정도에 영향을 미치는 사회 경제적 요인)

  • Purpose: This study explores the relationship between the health behavior and knowledge of elementary school students and the socio-economic status of their parents. Methods: A self-administrated questionnaire was provided to 238 students and their parents living within Seoul metropolitan area. The questionnaires were administered during December 2003. The relationship betweensocio-economic status, health behavior (19 items) and health knowledge (15 items) were analyzed using correlation, t-test and one-way ANOVA. Multiple regression analyses were also performed in order to investigate the relationship between health behavior and socio-economic status. Results: The results of multiple regression demonstrated that the health behavior of children living in apartments was 2.29 higher ($\beta$=2.29) than those not living in apartments. Health behavior scores among students with highly educated mothers were 0.42 higher ($\beta$=0.42) than those for students with relatively uneducated mothers. These numbers represent statistically significant values. Conclusion: Since health behavior appears to be directly proportional to socio-economic status ofthe parent, active intervention may be required in order to improve the health behavior of children with poorly educated mothers and who live in independent or multi-household houses.

The Association Between Health Promotion Behavior and Health Status of Nursing Students (간호대학생의 건강증진 행위와 건강상태와의 상관관계 연구)

  • This study was done for the purpose of investigating nursing students' health promotion behavior and health status and analyzing the relationship between health promotion behavior and health status. The subjects for this study were 249 nursing students obtained by a convenience sampleing from two Junior Colleges Located in Kangwon-do. The instruments used for this study were health promotion behavior scale developed by the researcher and modified Cornell Medical Index developed by Brodman, Erdmann, Lorge, Wolff & Broadbent. Data were collected from November 21 to December 10, 1994 by means of questionaire. The data were analyzed through the SPSS program by use of descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson Correlation Coefficient. The results of the study were as follows; 1) The subject's degree of health promotion behavior was about middle level 2) When the relationships between health promotion behavior and their general characteristics were explored, economic status, importance of health & perceived health status were revealed to have significant differences. 3) The subject's health status was at slightly high level, therefore viewed their health as slightly good. 4) When the relationships between health status and their general characteristics were explored, age and perceived health status were revealed to have significant differences. 5) In regard to the relationship between health promotion behavior and health status, psychological health status correlated positively with health promotion behavior (r=.193, p=0.002) ; physical health status correlated positively with psychological health status (r=0.493, p=0.000). But, physical health status did not show a significant correlation with health promotion behavior. In conclusion, it is important for late adolescents including nursing students to lay the foundation for chronic disease prevention by promoting and maintaining healthy lifestyles. Many of the leading causes of disease are preventable, through changes in lifestyle. The need to increase individual awareness of relationships between lifestyle and health and to enhance knowledge regarding the long-term effects of negative health behaviors, is an important nursing strategy for health promotion.

Effect of Oral Health Beliefs and the Moderating Effect of Parents' Oral Health Behavior on Oral Health Promotion Behavior among Adolescents (청소년의 구강건강신념이 구강건강증진행위에 미치는 영향과 부모의 구강건강관리행동의 조절효과)

  • Objectives : This study sought to identify the predisposing factors which influence the adolescent oral health enhancement behavior by analyzing controlling effects depending on the parents' oral health care behaviors in the relationship between the predisposing factors and adolescent behavior improvements which enhance oral health. Methods : A structured, self-administered questionnaire was given from July 6 through July 24, 2016. The collected data were analyzed with the SPSS 18.0 program. Results : Parents' oral health behaviors in terms of discipline and guidance showed a controlling effect in terms of importance (${\beta}$=.116) and benefits (${\beta}$=.133). In addition, the analysis showed that the parents' oral health care behavior had a controlling effect in terms of benefits (${\beta}$=.164) and susceptibility (${\beta}$=-.116). Conclusions : From the results of this study, the development of materials and education courses to lead to behavior changes are thought to be necessary in order to enhance the importance and benefits of the factors of oral health beliefs and to reduce psychological discomfort. Moreover, the role of parents with regard to desirable habits and beliefs to maintain oral health in their children is essential.
