  • This study investigated the effect of herbal extracts fermented by Lactobacillus plantarum (MBN) on hair growth in C57BL/6 mice and HaCaT cells. Five week old mice were applied with MBN topically (0.2 mL) once per for 21 days. Hair regrowth was evaluated by gross examination and verified by hematoxylin-eosin staining. Gene expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), keratinocyte growth factor (KGF), and transforming growth factor-beta1 ($TGF{\beta}1$), relevant to hair growth, were examined. The data revealed that MBN successfully promoted hair growth in both male and female mice at a dose between 200-500 mg/kg and improved hair thickness. The VEGF and KGF genes were expressed in a dose-dependant manner, whereas $TGF{\beta}1$ was not expressed. Moreover, nitric oxide was significantly increased, suggesting an improvement in blood flow. These results indicate that MBN effectively promoted hair growth and gene expression relevant to hair growth in an animal model.

  • This experiment investigated the effect of mixed extracts obtained from Mylabris phalerata Pall. and Drynariae Rhizoma on hair growth activity of the normal and spontaneous alopecia areata model of C57BL/6N mice for 16 days. First, we examined morphological regrowth of hair in normal and spontaneous alopecia model of C57BL/6N mice. Second, we examined immunoreactive density of vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF), c-kit and protein kinase $C-{\alpha}(PKC-{\alpha})$ in skin of normal C57BL/6N mice by immunohistochemical methods. Third, we investigated expression of $TGF-{\beta}$, prolactin and placenta lactogen after topical application of mixed extracts of Mylabris phalerata Pall. and Drynariae Rhizoma to skin by RT-PCR. The results were as follows: Hair growth effect from middle and high concentration of mixed extracts of Mylabris phalerata Pall. and Drynariae Rhizoma was observed in 80% of normal mice in whose hair had been clipped in 15th days. Hair growth effect of all concentrations of mixed extracts of Mylabris phalerata Pall. and Drynariae Rhizoma was observed in 100% of spontaneous alopecia model of C57BL/6N mice in 15th days. Immunoreactive density of VEGF, c-kit and $PKC-{\alpha}$ in skin of all concentrations of mixed extracts of Mylabris phalerata Pall. and Drynariae Rhizoma were strongly stained in epidermis, bulge, secondary hair germ cells and cutaneous trunci m. compare to control group in 10th day. In experimental III group, Immunoreactive density of VEGF, c-kit and $PKC-{\alpha}$ in skin were strongly stained in inner and outer root sheath of skin. The treatment of mixed extracts of Mylabris phalerata Pall. and Drynariae Rhizoma increased the expression of $TGF-{\beta}$, placenta lactogen and prolactin in the skin of normal C57BL/6N mice compared to control group. These experiments suggest that mixed extracts of Mylabris phalerata Pall. and Drynariae Rhizoma may stimulate the topical hair growth activity and it can be useful for treatment of alopecia areata.

  • Ar ions were implanted at 1 MeV into (100)Cz Si wafers with dose of 1 * 10$^{15}$ ions/cm$^{2}$. Damage induced by high energy implantation and its annealing behavior during rapid thermal annealing for 10sec at temperatures from 550 to 1100${\circ}C$ were investigated by crosssection transmission electron microscopy study. It can be clearly seen from the observation that the SPE(Solid Phase Epitaxy) regrowth of the buried amorphous layer induced by ion implantation proceeds from both upper and lower amorphous/crystalline (a/c) interfaces, and the activation energy for SPE from interfaces were both 1.43eV. Misfit dislocation where two interfaces met was formed and it coalesced into the hair pin dislocation in the upper regrown region. At the higher temperature after annealing out of the misfit dislocation, hair pin dislocations showed considerable drop in its bandwidth. However, they were not disappeared even at the temperature 1100${\circ}C$ with the end of range dislocation loops which were formed at the original lower a/c interface.

  • A dog (5.6 kg, 4-year-old, castrated male, Miniature pinscher) with diffuse symmetric alopecia on the chest and excessive scales was referred to Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Chungnam National University, Korea. On physical examination, diffuse alopecia on ventral aspect of the neck and caudomedial thighs, and severe scales were presented. Dermatologic tests of lesions revealed bacterial infections. Histopathologically, atrophy of hair bulb was observed in the severely alopecic lesion of caudomedial thighs. ACTH stimulation test was performed to differentiate the endocrine disorder related to generalized alopecia. The pre-ACTH serum testosterone and progesterone concentrations were above normal ranges and the post-ACTH serum testosterone concentration was high. The pre- and post-ACTH serum estradiol and cortisol concentrations were within normal ranges. Canine pattern alopecia was diagnosed based on history, physical examination, hormonal assay and dermatohistopathologic examination. After 3 months of melatonin administration, multifocal alopecia on the trunk was improved and general hair regrowth was identified.

  • Background: Simvastatin belongs to the statin family, whose members have immunomodulatory activities. Ezetimibe have synergetic effects when co-administered with simvastatin. In several case reports, alopecia totalis and alopecia universalis were successfully treated with simvastatin/ezetimibe, suggesting that this combination could be a new efficient therapy for recalcitrant alopecia areata (AA). Objective: To verify the efficacy of the simvastatin/ezetimibe combination therapy for recalcitrant AA and investigate the relationship between various treatment responses and prognostic factors. Methods: This prospective open study was performed in patients with recalcitrant AA with the bald surface exceeding 75%. All patients took simvastatin (40 mg) and ezetimibe (10 mg) daily. The extent of hair regrowth expressed as percentage of the bald area was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the therapy. Results: Of 14 enrolled patients, 4 patients (28.6%) were judged as responders showing regrowth of 30% to 80% after 3 months of treatment. The mean age of onset in non-responders was significantly lower than in responders. The total score of prognostic factors, calculated as a sum of factors related to poor prognosis, was much lower in responders than in non-responders. Conclusion: The remission rate in this study was unsatisfactory. However, since the recruited patients had not responded to any other treatments for AA, simvastatin/ezetimibe can still be considered as an alternative treatment for recalcitrant AA. The total scores of the prognostic factors were statistically different between responders and non-responders. These results can be used to predict the outcome of treatment with simvastatin/ezetimibe and anticipate prognosis.

  • Generally, it takes a long time to purify wood vinegar, and it contains toxic compounds such as tar, methanol, phenol and benzopyrene. To reduce the toxicity of wood vinegar itself, we have developed a new purification method of wood vinegar using an oxidation-cohesion reaction and distillation with an active carbon. We have investigated the physico-chemical change (pH, specific gravity, refractive index and dissolved tar), the change of amount of toxic compounds (carbonyl group, phenol, benzopyrene and residual solvents) and organic acids (formic acid (FA), acetic acid (AA), propionic acid (PA)) of the purified wood vinegar under the long term and accelerated storage conditions. Also, we have evaluated the effect of the purified wood vinegar on hair growth using an alopecia model of C57BL/6 mice. As a result, we could find out that the purified wood vinegar was stable and remained without decay under the storage conditions and benzopyrene, a carcinogenic agent, was not detected in the purified wood vinegar. After topical treatment of the purified wood vinegar solution or minoxidil (MXD) for 2 weeks to dorsal skin, the hair regrowth of the mice accelerated faster than that of the control, with no clinical signs. In conclusion, we could suggest a guideline for quality control of process to reduce the toxic compounds in wood vinegar and it might be a useful hair growth promoter in the treatment of baldness or alopecia.

  • Guinea pigs were cutaneously inoculated with Trichophyton verrucosum var album, that is a common causative fungus of dermatophytosis in cattle. The developmental process of lesions, clinical and histopathological changes and reisolations of the fungi were studied to evaluate the pathogenicity of Trichophyton verrucosum var album in guinea pigs. Results obtained through the experiments were summarized as follows : 1. The incidence of infection of the clipping group was 13(86%) of 15 animals, and that of the plucking group was 14(93%) of 15 animals. In both of the clipping and plucking groups, visible cutaneoas lesions were developed between 4 and 7 days post inoculation(p.i.). The spreading and the climax stages persisted for 4 to 11 and 6 to 12 days, respectively. 2. In macroscopic observations, formation of various degree of erythemas and scales over the inoculated skin sites were observed in the spreading stage. In the climax stage, exudative changes and dark red crusts were formed as typical circular lesions. In the healing stage, the lesions revealed shedding of crust, alopecia and hair regrowth. 3. In histopathological observations, infiltration of inflammatory cells, hyperplasia, microabscesses and keratinous-hyaloid materials of epidermis were observed in the spreading stage. Hyphal invasion was primarily observed at the level of epidermis and pilosebaceous ducts. In the climax stage, the infected epidermis was thick with severe hyperplasia, hyperkeratosis and acanthosis. The microabscesses with fungal hyphae, folliculitis and hyperplasia of external root sheath were observed in the dermis. The fungal hyphae were observed only in the tissues of hair follicles, that were internal root sheath, cuticle, the keratinized portions of cortex and medulla 4. In reisolation of the inoculated fungus, all trials for ten animals showed positive cultures until 25 days p.i.. Afterward, the reisolation rates were gradually decreased, showing all negative after 40 days p.i..

  • The potential role of topical valproate (VPA) in hair regrowth has been recently suggested. However, safety reports of VPA as a topical formulation are lacking. Therefore, in the present study, we investigated whether VPA causes skin irritation in humans. We first performed a cell viability test and showed that VPA did not exhibit toxicity toward HaCaT keratinocytes, fibroblasts, and RBL-3H mast cells. We then performed clinical patch test and skin irritation test through transdermal drug delivery with the help of microneedle rollers. No significant findings were obtained in the clinical patch test. In the skin irritation test, only 1 patient showed erythema at 1 hr, but the irritation reaction faded away within a few hours. Erythema and edema were not observed at 24 hr. We concluded that VPA has minimal potential to elicit skin irritation. Therefore, we consider that VPA can safely be applied to human skin.

  • A corneal dermoid is a benign congenital mass usually affecting the lateral limbal region. A 3-month old male Shih Tzu dog with abnormal tissue on right cornea was referred to Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Seoul National University. On ophthalmic examination, there was no evidence of visual impairment. Slit lamp biomicroscopy assessment revealed a mass, located in the inferior and temporal part of right cornea. The lesion was typically hemispheric and covered with pink skin. Superficial keratectomy was performed to remove the mass. On histopathological examination, the lesion was diagnosed as a corneal dermoid. Four months after operation, there had been no recurrence and hair regrowth.
