Clinical Study on Ocular fatigue (Dry Eye) Patients (눈피로(안구건조) 환자에 대한 임상적 고찰)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this report was to examine the relation between ocular fatigue and dry eye symptoms in patients with ocular fatigue. Methods : 115 patients with ocular fatigue disease were included in this analyses. The study examination included a symptom interview that assessed stiff sense, foreign body sense, pain, soreness, redness, etc. and ocular fatigue. Results : The survey showed in subjective ocular fatigue in all subjects. All patients(115) reported symptoms of ocular fatigue and 25.2% (29/115) were diagnosed as having dry eye with symptoms. Conclusions : These findings suggest that there is a strong between ocular fatigue and dry eye.

The Effect of Fatigue and Stress on Dry eye (피로와 스트레스가 안구건조에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: This study was performed to investigate the relationship between dry eye by fatigue and stress. Methods: Using the survey data aimed at a total of 365 adults aged 19 and over, the subjects' sociodemographic variables, Fatigue Severity Scale, Stress Scale, and Ocular Surface Disease Index were applied in a self-administering way, and the cross-sectional study was conducted. Results: The dry eye appeared significantly higher in women, and the more the alcohol was drunk, the higher the dry eye appeared in those who had chronic diseases. The dry eye showed slightly higher in people aged 40 and over, smokers, and operated eyes, but there were not significant differences. On the other hand, the dry eye was significantly higher in the contact lens worn group. The higher the fatigue was in the group, the more serious the dry eye was, and as the stress level increased, the dry eye also increased. The dry eye appeared odds ratio 1.53 times higher in the high fatigue group, and odds ratio 3.87 times higher in the contact lens worn group. Conclusions: It was identified that the higher the fatigue and stress was, the more the dry eye was felt much.

The effects of muscle fatigue of knee muscles on balance ability in healthy adults (무릎 근육의 근피로가 정상 성인의 균형에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives The purpose of this study was to examine the effects muscle fatigue at the knee muscles on balance during standing in healthy adults. Methods Thirty healthy adults were recruited along with their written informed consent. Subjects were randomly assigned to knee extensor group (fatigue on knee extensor, KE), and knee flexor group (fatigue on knee flexor, KF). And subjects performed exercise with each muscle group until muscle fatigue was induced. They were assessed balance ability by functional reaching test (FRT), limit of stability (LOS), and postural sway (one leg standing, normal eye open (NO), normal eye close (NC), pillow with eye open (FO), and pillow with eye close (FC)) before and after fatigue. Results There were significant group differences balance performances in FRT, anterior of limit of stability, one leg standing, and the muscle fatigue of knee muscles were decreased balance performances. The balance performance was affected by visual sense and proprioception. Conclusions These results show that the muscle fatigue of knee muscles decreased balance performance. Therefore, balance exercise program should be trained without muscle fatigue.

Evaluating the Effects of Dry Eye Syndrome on Ocular Fatigue and Attentiveness (건성안증후군의 눈 피로도와 주의집중력에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: This study was aimed to evaluate the effects of dry eye syndrome on ocular fatigue and attentiveness. Methods: This study targeted 512 subjects who did not have an abnormal visual function, did not wear contact lens, had corrective eyesight over 0.8, and were between 19 and 83 year olds (mean age of 40.27 years). General characteristics (i.e., sex, age, drinking, and smoking status), dry eye syndrome, the score of a survey on ocular fatigue, and sub-factors of attentiveness were tested and analyzed. Results: Among the subjects, 312 were women and the mean age of them was 40.27 years. The number of drinkers was 260 and there were more drinkers than non-drinkers. There were 438 non-smokers, which was more than smokers. Dry eye syndrome showed positive correlations with age, sex, smoking, drinking, and eye fatigue. Attentiveness showed significant differences with BET, NAR, OET, and RED, which were sub-factors, had significant effects on dry eye syndrome. Conclusion: People with dry eye syndrome showed lower attentiveness than those who without it and higher dry eye syndrome increased ocular fatigue.

Dry Eye Syndrome and Ocular Fatigue according to the Status of Contact Lens Wearing and Management among Female University Students (여대생의 콘택트렌즈 착용 및 관리 실태에 따른 안구건조증과 눈 피로)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine dry eye syndrome and ocular fatigue according to the status of contact lens wearing and management among female university students. Methods: The subjects were 195 female university students wearing contact lenses. Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) and Virtual Reality Symptom Questionnaire (VRSQ) were used to determine the level of dry eye syndrome and ocular fatigue. The SPSS/WIN 21.0 program was used for analysis of data. Results: Significant differences in the level of dry eye syndrome were observed according to the period of case solution change (F=3.36, p=.037) and the reasons for the change of lens (F=4.56, p=.004). In ocular fatigue, significant differences were observed according to the price of lens (F=3.53, p=.031), rinse in storing lens in a case (t=-2.57, p=.011), and learning about contact lens (t=-2.01, p=.046). A significant positive correlation was observed between dry eye syndrome and ocular fatigue in the subjects. Conclusion: The results of this study show that some subjects have problems in wearing and management of contact lenses. Therefore, an education program related to contact lenses should be provided to contact lens wearers to improve the status of wearing and management of contact lenses.

Development of VR Prototype for Reducing Eye Fatigue (안구 피로 감소를 위한 VR 기기 프로토타입 개발)

  • This paper aims to develop a VR device prototype for reducing eye fatigue. As VR devices become popular, it is hoped that many cases of eye fatigue will be reported, and that the problems of VR devices will be corrected and repaired for a better future so that the fast speed and dynamic environment of 4th industrial revolution can be enjoyed with ease. In this paper, VR devices with a description of VR devices, eye fatigue related cases, time-out sensor for reducing eye fatigue, and eyeball massage functions were designed, and a VR device prototype was developed. These features can help reduce fatigue even if used for long periods of time by blocking electromagnetic waves harmful to the human body, and the future of VR could develop in the future.

Evaluating Factors Affecting Ocular Fatigue of College Students (대학생의 눈 피로도에 영향을 미치는 요인에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: The objectives of this study were to evaluate and analyze the factors affecting the ocular fatigue of college students, and provide the baseline data for reducing the ocular fatigue. Methods: Ocular fatigue evaluation survey was conducted to 270 college students who were attending school at the time of the survey. McMonnies questionnaire was used to confirm the presence of dry eye syndrome and obtained data were analyzed afterward. Results: Reading duration(p=0.00), reading distance(p=0.05), reading posture(p=0.00), TV watching distance(p=0.01), computer usage time(p=0.01), and smartphone usage time(p=0.00) significantly affected eye fatigue. The presence of dry eye syndrome was affect significantly to on the ocular fatigue (p=0.00). Conclusion: Reading duration, the usage time of computer and smartphone, reading distance, and reading posture affected ocular fatigue. People with higher ocular fatigue showed higher dry eye syndrome scores. Further studies are needed to evaluate the appropriate multimedia use time, distance, and reading posture to decrease the ocular fatigue of college students.

  • In this paper, a new method of Eye Movement Pattern Encoding (EMPE) which is based on electrooculography(EOG) was suggested for the purpose of effective communication between man and machine, instead of Point-Of-Regard-Selection (PORS) method. Also, ocular interface is designed and the typing aid, eye-pattern writer, was constructed for the test of theoretical validity and its practical aspect. Effect of eye fatigue on the performance of ocular interface was quantified through fatigue test.

  • This paper surveys the various methodologies for the objective measurement of visual fatigue. Visual fatigue is a psychophysiological symtom caused by the excessive use of eyes and it can be used as an important measure of the effectiveness and the safety of visual displays. The purpose of this paper is to compare the various visual fatigue measurement methodologies in a sense of the suitability for the ergonomic research. The measurement methodologies based on accommodation, convergence, visual evoked potential, eye movement, eye blinking, and flicker fusion were discussed and compared.

Characteristics of Fatigue Crack Initiation and Fatigue Strength of Nitrided 1 Cr- 1Mo-0.25V Turbine Rotor Steels

  • To investigate the effect of nitriding layer on both fatigue crack initiation and fatigue life, turbine rotor steel ( IC.- 1Mo-0.25V steel) specimens were nitrided by the nitemper method and then put to a rotary bending fatigue test at room and elevated temperatures. In nitriding, temperature and time were controlled to obtain a different nitrided thickness. Microstructure analysis, micro-Victors hardness test, and scanning electron microscope observation were carried out for evaluating experiments. In results, the fatigue cracks of nitrided specimens were initiated at inclusion near the interface between nitrided layer and substrate, which showed fish-eye type appearance in fractograph. The fatigue life of nitrided specimens at every temperature was prolonged compared to that of the non-nitrided. However, there was not observable improvement in fatigue characteristics with the increase of a nitrided thickness.
