  • Purpose: To examine the levels of the disease-related knowledge and educational demands of pre-dialysis, chronic renal failure patients at different GFRs and stages. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional survey and aimed at 116 pre-dialysis, chronic renal failure patients, who were registered and received regular treatment from December 1 to December 31, 2009 at the nephrology departments of tertiary medical centers in Seoul. Stages were classified into Stage 3, 4 and 5 depending on GFR ranges. To measure the levels of knowledge and educational demands, the tool, which were first invented by Young Ae Lim (1996) and then modified by Hyo Sun Lim (2005) to adjust the knowledge and educational demands measuring tool for hemodialysis patients to pre-dialysis patients with chronic renal failure, was used. Collected data was analyzed with the SPSS WIN 12.0 program (average, standard deviation, Pearson's correlation coefficient, t-test and ANOVA). Results: There was a significant difference in the disease-related knowledge levels of the subjects at each stage (F=24.41, p=.000). The Scheffe post hoc test confirmed that patients at higher stages had higher levels of knowledge of their disease. Also, although the results showed that patients at higher stages had higher educational demands, there was no significant difference among the groups (F=1.259, p=.288). Conclusion: As patients have different levels of knowledge of the disease and educational demands depending on their stages, it is important to develop and use a systematic education program that reflects the demands and levels of patients at each stage in order to help pre-dialysis patients with chronic renal failure with self-management and improve their quality of life.

A questionnaire was modified pursuant to the IC & RC (International Certification & Reciprocity Consortium) Certified Prevention Specialist role delineation. The questionnaire consisted of five domains with 27 items. Data were collected via the self-administered questionnaire from October to November of 2009. 400 questionnaires were mailed and 144(36.0%) were returned. The collected data were analyzed using the Borich's needs assessment model and with SPSS/WIN 15.0. Results: Overall mean scores for the importance levels of competency ratings were 3.79, while the performance levels of the competency were 2.13 and Borich's need results were 6.32. Public Health and Mental Health Center showed the highest degree of educational needs in terms of education & program development (p=.022). Conclusion: The perceived importance levels pertaining to staff competency for alcohol prevention services in the workplace were higher than those of the current performance levels. Staff working for alcohol prevention services in the workplace showed a different level of educational need as regards these competency levels according to service providers. To promote the effectiveness of alcohol prevention services in the workplace, the development of an educational program to meet the needs of the service providers is necessary.

  • The aim of this study is to analyze the impact of step-by-step educational comic book behavior of the elementary school students and their reading levels on their learning competencies. To this end, qualitative research with focus group and deep interviews was conducted with students on different reading levels. During their repetitive reading activities, the students tended to use various educational comics within the same subjects area on their corresponding reading levels. Such behavior led the students to further read other books than comics in the similar subjects areas, and by doing so, the books acted as an important reference to the students' class materials. It was found that the students' such behavior has positive impact on the improvement of their learning competencies. It is hoped that this study will be supportive to develop self-study methods and effective reading guidance plans by improving the usage of educational comics.

Methods: The randomized control study was implemented on May 31, 2018, by randomly selecting 36 participants to compare educational virtual reality and videos. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS 20.0. Results: The participants were divided into an intervention group of 17(47.2%) and a control group of 19(52.8%). Regarding the levels of satisfaction, a significant difference (p= .010) was noted between the control (3.88 points) and the intervention groups (4.45 points). A significant difference (p= .001) was also noted between the intervention (80.3 points) and control (63.3 points) in terms of total simulation practical skills. Conclusion: Educational virtual reality can be an alternative training method to achieve the standard educational objectives by raising levels of educational interest and of achievement with practical skills.
