  • SAFE damper is a hybrid damper which is comprised of a friction damper and a metallic damper. These two dampers combine to resist external energy in stages. Under minor earthquake loads, the friction damper operates alone. However, the friction damper and metallic damper dissipate the energy together when a severe earthquake occurs. In comparison with other methods for seismic retrofitting, the SAFE damper has many advantages. The SAFE damper doesn't cause damage to façade of the building, and the construction period can be reduced when retrofitting. This paper describes experiments evaluating the structural performance of the SAFE damper. From the results, it was found that the structural performance of a conventional RC bare frame can be significantly improved by the installation of the SAFE damper.

  • In this study, a control method of MR(magneto-rheological) damper for a cruise bus is investigated. A virtual dynamic damper and a sky-hook algorithm are employed to control the damping characteristics of MR damper. Coefficients for a virtual dynamic damper are determined through the parameter identification. A quarter car model of a cruise bus is established by using ADAMS/Car program for the computer simulation. Sine wave excitation and random excitation are used to compare the controlled MR damper with the passive damper. From the simulation results, the performance of MR damper with a virtual dynamic damper is better than that of the passive damper.

  • A new type bi-directional damper using a tuned liquid column damper(TLCD) and a tuned sloshing damper(TSD) is introduced in this study. Two dampers are usually needed to reduce wind-induced responses of tall buildings since they are along and across wind ones. The proposed damper has the advantage of controlling both responses with one damper. One of objectives of this study is to derive analytical dynamics to investigate coupled effects due to TLCD and TSD. Another objective is to address the effect of coupled control force due to TLCD and TSD on the dynamic characteristic of the damper based on analytical dynamics. Shaking table test is undertaken to experimentally grasp dynamic characteristics of the damper under white noise excitation. Its dynamic characteristic is expressed by the transfer function from the shaking table acceleration to the control force generated from the damper. Finally, its design parameters are identified based on the coupled dynamics, which include the mass ratio of horizontal liquid column to total liquid for a TLCD, the participation factor of the fundamental liquid sloshing for a TSD and damping ratio for both cases.

  • Excessive stay cable vibrations can cause severe problems for cable-stayed bridges. In this paper a semiactive Magnetorheological (MR) damper is investigated to reduce cable vibrations. The control-oriented cable-damper model is first established; a computer simulation for the cable-damper system is carried out; and finally a MR damper is experimentally used to reduce the cable vibration in a laboratory environment using a semiactive control algorithm. Both the simulation and experimental results show that the semiactive MR damper achieves better control results than the corresponding passive damper.

  • This study deals with the design of a bi-directional damper using a tuned liquid damper(TLD) and a tuned liquid column damper(TLCD) for a SDOF building. Two dampers are usually needed to reduce wind-induced responses of tall buildings since they are along and across wind ones. The proposed damper has the advantage of controlling both responses with a single damper. The damper used in this study behaves as both a TLCD in a specific translational direction and a TLD in the other orthogonal direction. This paper presents experimental verification to confirm its control performance. First, shaking table test is carried out to investigate reducing responses by the damper. Control performance of the damper is expressed by the transfer function from shaking table accelerations to SDOF building ones. Testing results show that the damper reduced bi-directional responses of a SDOF building. Also, it reduced torsion responses.

  • The outrigger damper system has recently been proposed to reduce the dynamic response of tall buildings subjected to lateral loads. Previous studies have shown that the outrigger damper system could effectively increase the response reduction capacity of tall buildings. The outrigger damper system was used not only for a response reduction of tall buildings, but also for adjusting the differential column shortening. When an outrigger damper system is designed optimally for wind or earthquake loads, it shows good control performance against each target excitation. On the other hand, the outrigger damper system designed for the wind load cannot effectively control the seismic responses and vice versa. This study examined the control performance of a smart outrigger damper system for reducing both the wind and seismic responses. The smart outrigger damper system was comprised of magnetorheological dampers. A fuzzy logic control algorithm, which was optimized by a multi-objective genetic algorithm, was used to control the smart outrigger damper system. Numerical analysis showed that the smart outrigger damper system could provide superior control performance for the reduction of both wind and earthquake responses compared to the general outrigger system and passive outrigger damper system.

  • Continuously variable damper can yield diverse damping forces for a single damping velocity. It is widely used in the semi-active suspension system since, with right control logics, it can enhance ride comfort compared to the passive damper while not degrading driving safety. A key to the successful design of the continuously variable damper is the knowledge of its complex and nonlinear characteristics. In this paper, research has been done for analyzing characteristics of the continuously variable damper. Various damper components have been investigated and their effects upon the force-velocity characteristics of the damper have been examined. The effects of the damper characteristics change upon ride comfort and driving safety have also been investigated by numerical simulations.
