  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of mathematical modeling activities on mathematical problem solving abilities and mathematical dispositions in elementary school students. For this study, we administered mathematical modeling activities to fifth graders, which consisted of 8 topics taught over 16 classes. In the results of this study, mathematical modeling activities were statistically proven to be more effective in improving mathematical problem solving abilities and mathematical dispositions compared to traditional textbook-centered lessons. Also, it was found that mathematical modeling activities promoted student's mathematical thinking such as communication, reasoning, reflective thinking and critical thinking. It is a way to raise the formation of desirable mathematical dispositions by actively participating in modeling activities. It is proved that mathematical modeling activities quantitatively and qualitatively affect elementary school students's mathematical learning. Therefore, Educators may recognize the applicability of mathematical modeling on elementary school, and consider changing elementary teaching-learning methods and environment.

  • The aim of study was to identify the reliability and validity of an evaluation tool developed on the basis of performance outcome in Women's Health Nursing simulation practicum. A total of 110 undergraduate nursing students were recruited from one college. Data collection of this study was conducted between August and December of 2014. The data were analyzed using factor analysis, multitrait/multi-item matrix analysis, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and Cronbach's alpha with SPSS win 20.0 program. An exploratory factor analysis demonstrated that the four-factor structures of 10 items explained 68.2% of the total variance. It was significantly correlated with the Critical Thinking Disposition scale(r=.42, p <.001). The Cronbach's alpha was 0.89,ranging from 0.61 to 0.92. The results of this study support the reliability and validity of this evaluation tool. It could be a useful tool in evaluating the performance outcome in simulation practicum for nursing students.

  • People say that dichotomous way of thought in the Occident separating human from nature resulted in ecological crisis. Furthermore, it is said that surmounting Occidental way of thought is necessary to heal ecological crisis, and ecological elements in Oriental traditional philosophy could be the alternative for changing anti-ecological disposition inherent in Occidental thought. Although so-called ecology did not exist in Oriental traditional philosophy, there is room for reviewing Oriental traditional philosophy in terms of ecological elements or ecological orientation. In modern society, however, the vitality and significance of ecological elements in Oriental traditional philosophy cannot be conclusively verified. On the other hand, Occidental thought regarded as the main culprit of environmental destruction may not contain anti-ecological contents. Therefore, this study critically reviews the possibility and significance of modern change of ecological thought in Oriental tradition by raising two questions, "Is Occidental view of nature anti-ecological?" and "Is Oriental view of nature ecological?"
