  • This paper deals with the problem of autolanding for aircraft under windshear environment for which the landing trajectory is given. It is well known that the landing maneuver in windshear turbulence is very dangerous and hard for the pilot to control because windshear is unpredictable in when and where it happens and its aerodynamic characteristics are complicated. In order to accomplish satisfactory autolanding maneuver in this environment, we propose a gain-scheduled controller. The proposed controller consists of three parts: PID controller, called baseline controller, which is designed to satisfy requirements of stability and performance without considering windshear, gain scheduler based on fuzzy logic, and safety decision logic, which decides if the current autolanding maneuver needs to be aborted or not. The controller is applied to a 6-DOF simulation model of the associated airplane in order to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm. It is noted that a cross wind in the lateral direction is included to the simulation model. From the simulation results it is observed that the proposed gain scheduled controller shows superior performance than the case of controller without gain scheduling even in severe downburst and tailwind region of windshear. In addition, touchdown along centerline of the runway is more precise for the proposed controller than for the controller without gain scheduling in the cross wind and the tailwind.

  • This paper proposes an autolanding guidance and control algorithm with the lateral guidance law. This algorithm is basically formulated and designed in feedback linearization based on singular perturbation. Main features of this algorithm are two facts. One of those is that when a certain situation happens that airplane must realign to the runway suddenly assigned due to unexpected environment change around the landing site, the heading guidance in this algorithm is very valuable, and the other is the fact that the inner loop control of this algorithm is able to be designed directly based on the Handling Quality Requirements that most flight control systems must be satisfied with. To illustrate the potential of this algorithm, 6-DOF nonlinear simulation based on the nonlinear airplane model shown in Ref.[11] is carried out. The simulation results showed that the altitude response to the given landing trajectory is accurate, and the airplane heading alignment to the assigned runway from the lateral deviation is successful. It is noted that this algorithm is also applicable to unmanned aerial vehicle, which can be retrieved in autolanding technique, where the runway far retrieving the vehicle is in any direction for example at war field.

  • Automatic landing of UAVs receives increasing interest these days, with increasing number of the developed UAV systems. In this paper, a glidepath tracking algorithm of the subscale UAV was proposed and the performance was analyzed. Flight data analysis shows that the existing autolanding flight control algorithm has a classical type glidepath control. This paper presents an alternative glidepath tracking strategy based on embedded flight control law. The performance of the proposed strategy was investigated through the TDP(Touch Down Point) error analysis with regard to various flight environment: steady headwind, atmospheric disturbance, communication transfer delay. It was verified that the proposed glidepath tracking strategy can be successfully applied to the practical autolanding of UAV systems.

  • Researchers are now faced with a limited flight time of the hoverable UAV due to the sluggish technological advances of the Li-Po energy density and try to find a bypassing solution for the fully autonomous hoverable UAV mission planning. Although there are several candidate solutions, automated wireless charging is the most likely and realistic candidate and we are focusing on the autolanding strategy of the hoverable UAV in this paper since it is the main technology of it. We developed a hoverable UAV flight simulator including Li-Po battery pack simulator using MATLAB/Simulink and UAV flight and battery states are analyzed. The maximum motor power measured as 1,647 W occurs during the takeoff and cell voltage decreases down to 3.39 V during the procedure. It proves that the two Li-Po battery packs having 22 Ah and connected in series forming 12S1P are appropriate for the autolanding mission planning.

  • This paper deals with a design of nonlinear glide slope capture logic using dynamic model inversion in singular perturbation, which is applicable to the autolanding in ILS. Aircraft dynamics are separated into the fast time-scale variables, related with the inner-loop design, and the slow time-scale variables, related with the outer-loop design. It is assumed that the aircraft starts landing at 1000ft of altitude, -2.5deg of flight path angle, and 250ft/sec of velocity. In the outer-loop design, commands of altitude and velocity are selected and thereby the pseudo-controls of power level and pitch rate are determined. Also the elevator input to the aircraft is determined in the inner-loop design. The final design is evaluated in 6 DOF simulation model of the associated aircraft, in which the actuator models are not included. The results show the satisfactory autolanding ...

  • Description in this paper is a system for new range measurement method between an aircraft and runway with circular mark in landing runway. The system includes an altimeter and a camera installed on the aircraft, and a circular mark placed on a landing runway. The camera installed on the aircraft must be oriented toward in front of the aircraft, and configured to detect the shape of the circular mark in image information form and a flight control computer configured to calculate the angle between the aircraft and the ground, the ground range between the aircraft and the circular mark, and the slant range between the aircraft and the circular mark with the altitude information measured by the altimeter. This system configured to control the automatic landing of the aircraft with this information.
