Convergent Factors Affecting Problem Behaviors in Out-of-school Adolescents: A Focus on Gender Difference (학교 밖 청소년의 문제행동 관련 융복합적 요인: 성별차이를 중심으로)

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the problem behavior and its convergent factors in out-of-school adolescents, with a focus on gender differences. This study was a secondary data analysis study using out-of-school adolescents research data at Busan women and family development institute. The study was conducted in a total of 499 out-of-school adolescents (337 males, 162 females). The type of the 8 problem behaviors (run away from home, drop out, prostitution, violence, internet game addiction, theft, drug addiction, and smoking) were identified. The collected data were analyzed with multiple logistic regression. Among the problem behaviors of the participants, internet game addiction and theft were more significantly high in male out-of-school adolescents than female out-of-school adolescents. In internet game addiction, male out-of-school adolescents were 1.90 times higher than female out-of-school adolescents (p=.008, 95% CI=1.18-3.06). In theft, male out-of-school adolescents were 1.92 times higher than female out-of-school adolescents (p=.006, 95% CI=1.21-3.03). When the social measures were provided for those adolescents, a distinguished approach is required depending on the problem behavior and gender.

Impact of Family Violence Victimization on Peer Violence Behavior in Out-of-School Youths : Mediating Effect of Anxiety and Aggression (학교 밖 청소년의 가정폭력피해와 또래폭력가해와의 관계: 불안과 공격성의 매개효과)

  • The aim of this study is to identify factors that the victimization by family violence has influence on peer violence perpetration through the mediation of anxiety and aggression in out-of-school youths. Subjects consist of 169 out-of-school youths in Chungbuk and data are analyzed by regression analysis with 18.0 version. The findings of this study are as follows. First, the victimization by family violence has positive influence on peer violence perpetration. Second, when the mediating effect of anxiety and aggression is tested, aggression only plays a mediating role between family violence victimization and peer violence behavior. On the basis of the results, this study suggest that we make efforts such as prompt intervention for out-of-school youths and their's family after school dropout, the reinforcement of family relationship, family function and youth competency, and the transition of social perception regarding out-of-school youths to decrease family and peer violence.

The Influences of Personal Characteristics and Betting Games on Problem Gambling among Out-of-school Adolescents in South Korea (학교 밖 청소년의 개인 특성 및 돈내기 게임 경험이 문제도박에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was the first attempt to investigate which factors influence problem gambling among out-of-school adolescents in South Korea. Using data from the 2015 Survey on Youth Gambling Problems, this study examined the influences of personal characteristics and betting games on problem gambling among out-of-school adolescents. Regression analyses of personal characteristics on problem gambling showed that being male adolescents, having more allowance, living without parents/guardians, or belonging to probation was associated with higher likelihood of doing problem gambling among out-of-school adolescents. Also, regression analyses of betting games on problem gambling revealed that doing betting games more frequently, doing betting games more time, or spending more money on betting games was associated with higher likelihood of doing problem gambling among out-of-school adolescents. Based on the findings, this study suggested practice and policy implications for addressing problem gambling among out-of-school adolescents.

The Phenomenological Study on the Meaning of Services based on Practitioner's Experiences: With Practitioners for Out-of-School Youths (학교 밖 청소년 현장전문가의 활동경험에 대한 현상학적 연구)

  • The purpose of the phenomenological study was to explore the practitioner's experiences according to practitioner's perception and to enrich our understanding about them. In order to accomplish the purpose of research, 7 practitioners with out-of-school youths participated. Data were collected through in-depth interview. In addition, the data were analyzed by a Colaizzi's phenomenological analysis. The findings showed that the meaning of experiences in practitioners with out-of-school youths were identified as 17 themes and 5 categories. The 5 categories consisted of "School is not amused", "Family is unhappy", "They hide behind pain or excuses", "Let's go together, until it can be found", "We hope the world changed". Based on the findings, we discussed the meaning of experiences in practitioners with out-of-school youths. And lastly, this results made suggestions for the social welfare policies and practices for them.

The Current Status of Life and Happiness of Out of School Youth (학교 밖 청소년의 생활실태와 행복감 관련 변인)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the current status of life and psychological characteristics of 250 out of school youth in Cheonan city, and to identify the factors affecting the happiness. For statistical analysis, SPSS 21.0 were used, and reliability, mean comparison, correlation and multiple regression analysis were applied. First, adolescents who stopped studying due to family problems was lower in self-esteem than those who did for other reasons. Males was higher in happiness than females, and those who were less than two years of drop-out duration than those with over two years. Second, out of school youth used a day as 7.9 sleeping hours, 3.91 working hours. For the places for daily activities, they stayed at home for 10.73 hours, at working place for 3.66 hours. The future plan was the most for job plan. Third, there was a positive correlation between self-esteem, hope, and happiness of adolescents out of school. Fourth, the relative impact on the happiness of out of school youth ranked in the order of self-esteem, hope, employment plans, and household income level.

A Convergence Study for the Influence of Parental Attitudes on Smoking in Out-of-School Youths (학교 밖 청소년 부모의 양육태도가 흡연에 미치는 영향에 대한 융합적 연구)

  • This study was a descriptive research to identify the health behavior and mental health and the influence of parental attitudes according to smoking in out-of-school youths. The study subjects were 282 enrolled in youth support center located in Seoul and Chungnam areaa, x2-test, t-test, multiple logistic regression were used for analysis. The results of this study, sex, father's education level, drinking, sexual experience, and parental attitude had a significant effect on smoking in out-of-school youths. And, it is higher possibility to smoke a group with a high score in parental attitudes. Based of this study's findings, it is necessary to develop specific smoking prevention and smoking cessation program for out-of-school youths according to parental attitude.

Status and Challenges of Korean Out of School Children Health Check-up (한국 학교 밖 청소년 건강검진의 현황과 과제)

  • Health inequality means health gaps that can be affected adverse effects to the vulnerable groups in a society. Many scholars argue that it is needed social interventions to reduce health gaps between the vulnerable and the privileged in a society, because social inequalities can be caused and resulted health inequality among them. In this context, this article introduces Korean out of school children health check-up as part of the policies to reduce health inequality in the society. For a long time, many out of school children have been alienated from the national health checkup systems. That means they are not only marginalized groups in Korean society, but also excluded from the benefits of health promotion and health management. Many runaway youths are struggling to live by themselves, who are escaped from their families and they don't have enough resources to keep their health. They are also young and low waged workers who are expelled to the streets, while they don't have any support and protection from the communities. Out of school children health checkup has been conducted to the adolescents who stay in the shelters or study in alternative schools. To get meaningful results as the health inequality reduction policy, it is needed to expand out of children health checkup to the runaway teenagers.

A Qualitative Study on the Gambling Experiences of delinquents Juvenile Dropouts (학교 밖 비행청소년의 도박경험에 관한 질적연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to understand in depth the gambling experiences of delinquent juveniles who have dropped out of school and analyze the content and meaning of gambling experiences. Thus, utilized a Giorgi's phenomenological research method. Data was gathered through in-depth interviews, and the gambling experiences of six youths who are under juvenile law protective disposition were examined through a four-step analytic process. From the results, 6 parent components and 18 sub-components were derived. That is, "the temptation of close gambling", "trapped in the bridle of gambling", "deterioration of life", "damaged of non-official networks relationship", "corruption of existence" and "attempts to escape gambling" were appeared. These results are meaningful because they have allowed researchers to identify the essential meaning and experiential structure of delinquents juvenile' gambling experiences outside of school, which has not been studied thus far. Further, this study has empirical value as its framework includes a joint analysis in terms of welfare and gambling addiction and focuses on a precarious population-delinquent juveniles who have dropped out of school. The results provide a foundation from which practical implications and policy alternatives for the prevention and treatment of gambling problems in delinquent juveniles dropped out of school.

A Phenomenological Study on Multicultural Adolescents' Career Preparation Out of School (학교밖 중도입국 청소년의 진로준비에 대한 현상학적 융합연구)

  • The purpose of this study provides multicultural adolescents' out of school career preparation experience. Seven multicultural adolescents out of school living in Seoul, Gyeonggido, Chungchungdo were selected for the in-depth interview. Data were collected from July to September, 2019. This research utilized Colaizzi's phenomenological method. The participants provided 14 themes on the essential structure of experience and 5 theme clusters. The final 14 themes were relationship with friends, speedy learning ability, fear of learning, generous character, no dreaming, enjoying hobby, influence of job, influence of mother, no concept of career, looking for mother language-related job, no managing time and health, material abundance, trying diet, burden about test. Based on this result, it is suggested to acknowledge importance of positive motive pursuit for career, various support giving power, positive attitude of career, self-reflection, road to go for career preparation.

The Relationship Between Social Stigma and Psychosocial Adjustment in Out-of-School Youth: The Moderating Effects of Self-concept Clarity (학교 밖 청소년의 사회적 낙인과 심리사회적 적응 간의 관계: 자기개념 명확성의 조절효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of social stigma on psychosocial adjustment in out-of-school youth and the moderating effects of self-concept clarity on the relationship between social stigma and psychosocial adjustment. The subjects in this study were out-of-school youth who resided in the city of Busan, on whom a survey was conducted. The findings of the study were as follows: First, social stigma was found to have exercised a negative influence on self-concept clarity. Second, social stigma was found to have exercised a negative influence on psychosocial adjustment. Third, self-concept clarity was found to have exercised a negative influence on psychosocial adjustment. Fourth, self-concept clarity was found to have had moderating effects on the relationship between social stigma and psychosocial adjustment. This study is of significance in that it attempted to seek ways of improving the psychosocial adjustment of out-of-school youth and urged offering counseling intervention geared toward boosting self-concept clarity by analyzing the moderating effects of self-concept clarity on the relationship between social stigma and psychosocial adjustment.
