Response Modification Factors and No Collapse Design of Typical Bridges (응답수정계수와 일반교량의 붕괴방지설계)

  • The purpose of earthquake resistant design for typical bridges is the 'No Collapse Design' allowing emergency vehicles just after earthquakes. The Roadway Bridge Design Code provides design provisions to carry out such 'No Collapse Design' with a ductile mechanism and response modification factors given for connections and substructure play key role in this procedure. In case of response modification factors for substructure, the Roadway Bridge Design Code provides values considering ductility and redundancy. On the other hand, 'AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications' provides values considering additionally an artificial factor according to the bridge importance categories divided into critical, essential and others. In this study, a typical bridge with steel bearing connections and reinforced concrete piers is selected and different response modification factors for substructure are applied with design conditions given in the Roadway Bridge Design Code. Based on the comparison study of the design results, supplementary measures are suggested required by applying different response modification factors for substructure.

Serviceability Limit State and Response Modification Factors (기능수행수준과 응답수정계수)

  • While the Earthquake Resistant Design Part of Korean Roadway Bridge Design Code provides design procedures for the No Collapse Requirement, requirements for the Serviceability Limit State are not clearly provided. The basic design method to meet the No Collapse Requirement is the spectrum analysis method using response modification factors and the Serviceability Limit State is determined by both the importance factor and the response modification factor applied in the design procedure. The importance factor can be simply applied according to the bridge importance category, however, in moderate/low seismic regions the application of the response modification factor may bring different result according to design conditions. In this study, for a typical bridge in the moderate/low seismic regions, determination procedures for the Serviceability Limit State are reviewed by carrying out earthquake resistant design and supplementary provisions for the Earthquake Resistant Design Part are identified based on the study results.

Response Modification Coefficient Using Natural Period (고유진동주기를 이용한 응답수정계수)

  • In some current procedures, ground motions from different sources have been scaled by their peak ground accelerations and combined to obtain smoothed response spectra for specific regions. As consideration of the inelastic deformation capacity of structure, inelastic deformations are permitted under seismic ground excitation in all codes. In the ATC(Applied Technology Council) and UBC(Uniform Building Code), the inelastic design spectrum is obtained by reducing the elastic design spectrum by a factor that is independent of structural period. In this study, the average of nonlinear response spectra calculated from a sample of 20 records for each event are constructed to obtain the smoothed response spectra. These response spectra are used to examine the effects of structural strength factors such as the yield strength ratio and damping value. Through the regression analysis of nonlinear response of system for a given damping value and yield strength ratio, the required yield strength for seismic design can be estimated for a certain earthquake event. And a response modification coefficient depending on the natural period for current seismic design specifications are proposed.

Seismic Design of Bridges in Moderate Seismic Region and Response Modification Factors (중진지역 교량 내진설계와 응답수정계수)

  • ‘Korean Highway Bridge Design Code’ provides the spectrum analysis method with response modification factors for the seismic design of typical bridges. However, considering that korean peninsula is classified as moderate seismic regions and domestic circumstances for bridge design and construction are different from other countries, the applicability of this code is not yet proved. Therefore it is required to verify that applying the spectrum analysis method fulfills the no collapse requirement which is set forth as the basic seismic design concept. In this study two typical bridges with T and ${\prod}$ type piers are selected as analysis bridges and seismic designs are carried out by applying the spectrum analysis method with design conditions given for moderate seismic regions. Based on the results obtained through deign procedures, the role of the response modification factors and fulfillment of the no collapse requirement are discussed, from which supplementary provisions for the design code are identified.

Modification of Response Displacement Method for Seismic Design of Underground Structures under Domestic Conditions (국내 특성이 반영된 지하구조물의 내진설계를 위한 수정응답변위법)

  • In this study. the Modified Response Displacement Method(MRDM) for seismic design of underground box-type structures is proposed. Firstly, to investigate the applicability of the conventional RDM, various parametric studies are performed according to buried depth and soil conditions. Results from the conventional RDM are compared with those of time history analysis in terms of the maximum bending moment and relative displacement. The comparison shows that the velocity response spectrum and the determination method of foundation modulus which significantly influence the accuracy of RDM should be modified. Thus, the modified velocity response spectrum and the new determination method of foundation modulus are proposed under consideration of domestic conditions. In order to demonstrate the accuracy and validity of the proposed MRDM numerical analyses are performed according to different parameters such as depth of base rock, height and width of box, buried depth and soil condition. the comparison with the results of the time history analysis verifies the feasibility of the proposed MRDM for the seismic analysis.

Basic Design for Earthquake Resistance of Typical Bridges (일반교량의 내진성능 확보를 위한 기본설계)

  • Structural elements of typical bridges are superstructure, connections, substuctures and foundations and earthquake resistance is decided with the failure mechanism formed by substuctures and connections. Therefore earthquake resistant design should be carried out in the basic design step where design strengths, e.g. design sections for structural elements are determined. The Earthquake Resistant Design Part of Korean Roadway Bridge Design Code provides two basic design procedures. The first conventional procedure applies the Code-provided response modification factors. The second new procedure is the ductility-based earthquake resistant design, where designer can determine the response modification factors. In this study, basic designs including the two design processes are carried out for a typical bridge and supplements are identified in view of providing earthquake resistance.

  • 구조동력학 이론에 기초하여 내진설계 기술이 개발되었다. 그러므로 건축물의 내진설계를 근본적으로 이해하기 위해서는 구조동력학의 여러 가지 이론들을 먼저 알고 이들이 내진설계에 어떻게 적용이 되는지를 알아야 한다. 이 글은 구조기술자 여러분이 건축물의 내진설계를 이해하는데 도움이 될 수 있도록 하기 위하여 다음과 같이 3부로연재될예정이다. 제1부: 응답스펙트럼과구조물의동적해석 제2부: 등가정적해석법과반응수정계수의배경 제3부: 능력스펙트럼법에의한비탄성해석 제1부에서는 단자유도 구조물의 지진해석을 통하여 응답스펙트럼을 작성하는 원리와 이를 이용하여 간편하게 지진해석을 수행하는 방법을 소개하고 응답스펙트럼에 근거하여 설계응답스펙트럼을 작성하는 방법과 다자유도 구조물의 지진응답을 알아내기 위한 응답 스펙트럼 해석법에 관하여 소개한다. 제2부에서는 구조동력학 이론에 근거하여 등가정적해석법이 유도된 근거와 반응수정계수를 사용하게 되는 배경을 소개하여 구조기술자들이내진설계에좀더확실한이해를할수있도록할것이다. 마지막으로 제3부에서는 비탄성해석을 좀 더 쉽게 하기 위하여 사용되는 능력스펙트럼법의 배경과 이를 이용하여 건축물의 성능점을 찾는 방법과 구조물의 비탄성 지진응답을 평가하는 방법에 대하여 소개함으로써 성능에 기초한 내진설계를 위한 기초 이론을 확실히 이해할수있도록할것이다. 구조동력학에 관한 내용을 여기에 상세히 소개하자면 엄청난 분량이 될 것이므로 여기서는 이 글을 읽는 구조기술자들이 구조동력학에 관한 기초적인 내용을 이해하고 있는 것으로 가정하기로 한다. 그러므로 구조동력학에 대한 기초적 이론을 확실히 이해하고 있지 못한분들은이글을읽기전에먼저구조동력학에관한알기쉬운서적을 먼저 읽도록 추천한다.

Self -Tuning Scheme for Parameters of PID Controllers by Fuzzy Inference (퍼지추론에 의한 PID제어기의 파라미터 Tuning의 구성)

  • A PID parameter tuning method was presented by the fuzzy singleton inference, based on step response-shaping of plant and experience knowledge of expert. The parameter-tuning has tow levels. The higher level determines modified coefficients for the controller based on operator's tuning know-how for characteristics of plant which can not be modeled. The lower level determines specified coefficients based on characteristics of response by Ziegler-Nickel's bounded sensitivity method. The last level parameters tuning of a PID controller is adjusted which the modified and specified coefficients makes adjustment rule, and is adjusted the proper value to each parameters by fuzzy singleton inference. Moreover, proposed the tuning method can reflex exporter knowledge and operator's tuning know-how and fuzzy singleton inference is rapidly operated.

Effect of Demand Spectrums on the Accuracy of Capacity Spectrum Method (요구곡선 산정방법에 따른 능력스펙트럼법의 유효성 평가 및 비교)

  • While transforming the inelastic system into the equivalent elastic one gives an advantage of simpler analysis, the actual inelastic behavior of the system is hardly modeled in the capacity spectrum method (CSM). Therefore, the accuracy of CSM depends on the precise estimation of equivalent period and damping ratio as well as the modification of the elastic response spectrum and the corresponding demand spectrum. In this paper, the effect of demand spectrums on the accuracy of CSM is evaluated. First, the response reduction factors provided in ATC-40 and Euro Code are evaluated. Numerical analysis results indicated that the acceleration responses obtained using the factor of Euro Code are closer to the actual response than those obtained using the factors of ATC-40. Next, the accuracy of CSM is evaluated constructing the demand spectrum using the absolute acceleration responses and pseudo acceleration responses. The results obtained using the absolute acceleration responses were found to be generally larger than those obtained using the pseudo ones. Since CSM often underestimates the response, the use of absolute acceleration response gives the response relatively closer to the exact ones. However, the difference becomes negligible as the hardening ratio and the yield strength ratio become larger.

  • Researchers in sample surveys have long recognized that what people say they are going to and what they do are not always the same, to say the least. Naturally this inconsistency distorts the survey results, especially in election poll surveys in Korea. How can one cope with this measurement bias\ulcorner This paper suggests two ideas: election poll tree and using posterior probability. By using two ideas the inconsistency of the poll survey results could be improved much or less.
