  • The ultimate aim of this work is to explore the antecedents that affect the loneliness felt by users who actively communicate through smartphones apps. To do this, three characteristics including individual, relational, and communication characteristics that can affect loneliness and the effects of these characteristics on loneliness are empirically analyzed. The research results are as follows. First, we found that conflict resolution ability had a significant effect on interpersonal conflict and loneliness. Second, social stress was found to have a significant effect on interpersonal conflict, communication fatigue, and loneliness. Third, lack of communication was found to have a significant effect on conflict resolution ability and loneliness. Finally, we found that communication fatigue had a significant effect on loneliness. These results are interpreted that in order to reduce the loneliness, it is necessary to continuously improve the ability to wisely resolve conflicts that may arise in the relationship between oneself and others. In addition, it is necessary to reduce the fear or burden of building relationships with others.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the longitudinal trajectories of life satisfaction, loneliness, and depression and to identify the factors that influence these trajectories in North Korean Defectors (NKD). Methods : NKD (n=300) who registered in the multi-regional adaptation center (Hana Center), within three years of settling in South Korea, were recruited into this study. Life satisfaction, loneliness, and depression were assessed with self-report questionnaires over a period of 4 years (7 waves of data). Latent growth modeling was conducted to assess the changes in life satisfaction, loneliness, and depression. Results : Findings from both unconditional and conditional models (with gender, South Korea settlement age, household income, marital status, and PTSD at wave 1) indicated a linear increase in loneliness and depression, and a linear decrease in life satisfaction over the 4-year period. In the conditional model, gender predicted the intercept of life satisfaction and depression. In addition, PTSD predicted the intercept of life satisfaction, loneliness, and depression and slope of depression. Conclusion : Our finding suggests that the mental health of NKD tends to deteriorate over time after settling in South Korea. Therefore, continuous support is necessary for their successful adaptation to the South Korean Society.

  • Previous studies have shown the significant association between loneliness and game addiction. To determine the causal relationship between them, the present study utilized a series of autoregressive cross-lagged models to early adolescent panel data (N = 346) from KOCCA's Game User Panel Research. Results indicated that loneliness and game addiction, respectively, had relatively strong and stable autoregressive effects across four time points. Also, game addiction at a prior time increased loneliness at a later time, but loneliness was not significantly related to game addiction later in time. These results suggest that game addiction may cause loneliness, not the vice versa.
