• This paper investigates the impact and behavior of foreign equity investment in Asian emerging economies during the 2007-2008 and the 2010-2012 global financial crises in terms of volatility and return. The empirical results indicate that foreign investors show positive feedback trading behavior in the sample countries. We find evidence that foreign investors' net selling behavior significantly increases market volatility in most countries.

  • This paper investigates empirically the impact of foreign investors on a firm's dividend and investment decision making in Korean stock market. Empirical results using the sample firms in non-financial firms listed in Korean stock market whose settlement month are December, we find that foreign investors who declared participation in management didn't exert significant impact on dividend increase. In the case of investment, foreign investors exerts significant impact on R&D investments. Using Hausman-Taylor Instrumental Variable method, we controlled endogeneity problem related with foreign ownership and dividend and investment policy. The contribution of this paper is that the purpose of foreign investors whether or not participate in management is the most critical point and the impacts of foreign investors on dividends and investment are different whether they participate in management or not.

  • Foreign investors who invest in the Korean stock markets are exposed to two kinds of foreign exchange rate risk, the economic exposure and the translation exposure. The former is the foreign exchange rate exposure in return generating process of the assets invested and the latter is the foreign exchange rate exposure in the translation of domestic return into foreign investors' currency. Domestic investors, however, are exposed only to foreign exchange rate exposure in the asset invested. This different situation on foreign exchange rate exposure between foreign investors and domestic investors can induce different response to exchange rate change by investor groups. Previous studies on foreign exchange rate exposure of Korean firms reported that quite a few Korean firms are exposed to foreign exchange risks and suggested to manage the foreign exchange risks. Also, many studies on the market segmentation showed that a market can be practically segmented according to the characteristics of investor groups. These studies support the hypothesis that the Korean stock market can be practically segmented by the foreign investors' attitude to the foreign exchange rate exposure. This study examines the response of both foreign investors and domestic investors to the foreign exchange rate exposures in Korean stock markets. Test results show that foreign investors increase their sell transactions when the foreign exchange rate exposure of the previous day is negative. This result can be possible when foreign investors attempt to actively manage the decrease in value of their assets due to rising of exchange rate. Analysis on the sell order data is also supportive to this interpretation. Foreign investors also increase their buy transactions when the foreign exchange rate exposure of the previous day is negative. This result can be possible when foreign investors use actively the relation between the increase in asset value and the translation gain due to declining of exchange rate. Analyses on buy order data, however, do not show the same result as the analyses on transaction data. This difference may come from the difference of information contained in transaction data and order data. In summary, the result of the paper supports the hypothesis that foreign investors response differently to foreign exchange rate exposure compared with domestic, Korean investors. Two groups do not show different response when exchange rate exposure is positive, i.e., as foreign exchange rate is increase (decrease), the asset value is increase (decrease). However, foreign investors' response is different from that of domestic investors when exchange rate exposure is negative, i.e., as foreign exchange rate is increase (decrease), the asset value is decrease (increase). These results mean that foreign investors and domestic investors are placed in different situations related to foreign exchange rate exposure, and these differences are reflected in the Korean stock markets. And domestic investors need to consider foreign investors' different attitude to the foreign exchange rate exposure when they analysis foreign investors' trading behavior.

  • This study is designed to investigate whether the information spillover effect is existed between the foreign investors' unexpected volatility of net purchasing intensity and the volatilities of returns in terms of daily closing stock return, overnight return, and daytime return, before and after financial crisis in Korea. The result of this study shows that there is negative information spillover effect between the foreign investors' unexpected volatility of net purchasing intensity and the volatility of daily closing stock return for time t-1. However, there is an opposite result for time t, showing positive information transmission effect. For the overnight return, the test result provides there is no statistical significance between the foreign investor's unexpected volatility of net purchasing intensity and the volatilities of return. In addition, I found that the information transmission effect is existed between the foreign investor's unexpected volatility of net purchasing intensity and the volatilities of the daytime return for the entire timeline.

  • This study analyzes how capital market comovement can affect investors' decision making. We first analyze time-varying correlation coefficient between stock indices of U.S.A. and Korea. and then, using our empirical results, attempt to draw implications on investors' behavior. We find that the tendency of comovement between Korea and U.S.A. equity returns has considerably increased after the financial crisis of late 1997. Through the analysis of investors' behavior, we find that foreign investors, contrary to ITC's (Investment Trust Company) and individual investors, buy more shares in Korean markets as American stock prices go up. Foreign investors employ dynamic hedging strategy and give more weight on global economic factors than domestic ones. Our empirical results as a whole imply that investment behavior of foreign investors is most closely related to comovement of U.S.A. and Korea capital markets.

  • It is generally accepted that the momentum strategies are effective in the short-term, and the contrarian strategies are profitable in the long run in major stock markets in the world. In Korean market, however, the contrarian is considered effective investment strategy both in the short- and long-term. We investigate whether this is true after 1999, and try to find out the reasons for this phenomena. We found that the contrarian strategies are still effective. Foreign investors showed consistent investment behavior both in Korean and abroad: they followed momentum in the short-tem, and contrarian in the longer-term. The individual investors, who are thought to be noise trader, showed different behavior. They followed contrarian strategies both in the short-and long-term. The reason that the contrarian is observed in Korean market regardless of the investment horizon is thought to be the irrtional behavior of individual investors.

  • As the proportion of intangible assets within a firm increases, the importance of intangible assets is emphasized as a valuation factor for firm in global capital markets. This study empirically analyzed the effect of information about intangible assets on foreign investment. The results show that the foreign investment is significantly increased as a firm belongs to the group with high proportion of patent assets and has more registered patents. However, the foreign investment is significantly decreased as a firm belongs to the group with high proportion of other intangible assets. This suggests that patent assets which disclosure technical information are useful information for foreign investors' decision making by enhancing the transparency of firm. This study first examined the effect of intangible asset information on the attractiveness of foreign investment. In addition, this study positively suggests that foreign investors, as major investors in Korea, prefer firms with intangible assets that are informed through patent registration rather than vague technology.

  • After the year of 2000, the Korean government has abolished the limit on foreign investments. Foreign investments in the domestic market have been thriving since. In domestic stock market, the proportion of market value held by foreign investors reaches over 40%. There are many followers in the markets, asking about what kinds of the firm that foreign investors prefer. Prior researches show that foreign investors in the American and European markets prefer stocks of the firm which are well known and are geographically closer. In this paper, we attempt to define the financial characteristics of the firms in which foreigners invest in the Korean market. The result shows that foreign investors in the domestic market tend to prefer firms with high market value of capital and dividend yield. It also shows that foreign investors in the Korean market choose firms with high book value to market value over others, while the firms with high debt ratio and the portion of the largest stock holders are shunned. This research suggests that foreign portfolio investments in the Korean market have contributed to liquidity of stock market and changed the governance structure of domestic firms in a positive way.
