  • This research is to examine the factors affect technological innovation, which in turn is likely to related to financial performance in SMVs (Small-Medium Ventures). Empirical analyses showed that overseas market shares, R&D investment, firm size, firm capability, and centralization in decision-making are statistically related to technological innovation measured with patents and intellectual property. Additionally, technological innovation was found to have a positive relationship with financial performances measured with firms' assets and sale revenues. In conclusion, this research assist to devise a strategic plan for motivating technological innovation and realizing its performance in the SMVs.

  • In response to the recent rapid technological and market changes, the importance of the design of ambidextrous organization has been increasingly emphasized as one of the dynamic capabilities. Firms that show a high performance in the rapid technological and market changes appear to design and implement ambidextrous organization successfully. They have achieved both exploitative competence for continuous innovation with product development and exploratory competence for discontinuous innovation with new market and new technologies. We have examined why and how to design and operate ambidextrous organizations and the effects of ambidextrous organizational characteristics on the performance from structural, contextual and leadership perspectives. We conducted case studies on 3 Korean firms that showed different characteristics of industrial product, company size, etc. Longitudinal case studies exhibit different processes of design and operating ambidextrous organization according to innovative strategy and industrial characteristics.

  • Firms must focus on innovative activities via R&D investment in order to secure competitive advantage and sustainable growth. However, their innovative activities do not always result in successful outcomes and are often obstructed by uncertainty and non-appropriability of technology being developed and by insufficient internal resources and capabilities to tap into it. In this situation, collaboration with external partners can be a part of good alternative strategy to solve those problems. This paper aims to analyze what factors lead to Korean manufacturing companies’ decision to collaborate with external partners for technology innovation. For empirical analysis, we used the Korean Innovation Data compiled by STEPI, government-funded research institute in Korea. The research findings are: 1) firms tend to participate in external collaboration for product innovation with greater firm size, more past collaboration experiences and when they belong to high-tech industries 2) unlike our expectation, our chosen ‘innovation-impeding’ factors are found not to contribute to the enhancement of collaboration for product innovation.

  • This study micro-analyzed the impact of innovation capabilities on innovation performance by type of CEO, with innovative SMEs being subject to research. In addition, the impact of CEO type on innovative capabilities and the impact of innovative capabilities on innovation performance were studied together. In order to achieve the research objective, we conducted an empirical analysis of 250 innovative small and medium-sized enterprises registered in the medium-term department as research targets and the results are as follows. First, the analysis of the impact of the type of CEO on the capacity of innovation shows that market-oriented, technology-driven and consultant-type CEOs have a significant impact on the amount of technology change reduction, but managed CEOs do not see any statistically significant differences in the amount of technology change reduction areas. Managed CEOs did not see statistically significant differences in the amount of technology change-sensitive areas. In addition, it was analyzed that the current type of CEO of small businesses does not affect the R&D technology digestion capacity of technological innovation capabilities. Second, the analysis of the relationship between innovation capabilities and innovation performance did not have a statistically significant effect. Third, the analysis of the adjustment effect between the type of CEO and the capacity of innovation according to the growth stage of small businesses shows that the technology and the consultant-type CEO affect the amount of the area of technology change, but the managed and market-type CEOs did not have the adjustment effect. Fourth, the analysis of the capacity of innovation and the effect of adjustment between innovation and innovation in the growth phase of innovative SMEs did not have a statistically significant effect.

  • Many Korean companies wanted to improve technological competitiveness and business performance radically through technology leadership initiatives. In-depth case studies about successful Korean technological innovation in the technology generation stage have potential to minimize Korea and developing country firms' trial and error when they are pursuing new technological innovation in the technology generation stage. There are few studies about developing country firms' technological innovations in the technology generation stage and especially process innovation studies are far less performed compared to product innovation studies. This is an exploratory study of POSCO's FINEX process technology innovation in the technology generation stage. These are my findings from this study. Firstly, leadership innovation in the technology generation stage is not a continuous development of catch-up innovation in the technology internalization stage and only top managements can initiate highly risky leadership innovation. Secondly, developing country firms which lacked in technological capability overcomes difficulties in the early stage through complementary technological collaboration with R&D first-movers. Thirdly, this company become a technology leader in spite of late entry in technology development race with developed country firms through rapid scale-ups.

  • This study analyzes determinants of innovation in Korea manufacturing industries from 2005 to 2007. In order to do this, we use raw data from 'Korea Innovation Survey 2008: Manufacturing Sector' conducted by STEPI, and also collect financial statement data from Korea Investors Service. As an analytical method for the empirical test, we utilize Probit model. Empirical results show that firm size and market concentration have positive relationship with firm's innovation activities. These support the ‘Schumpeterian hypothesis’. This would be the most distinguished feature of this study compared to previous literatures. Our study also shows that R&D personnel ratio, R&D intensity, and advertising intensity have positive effects on firms' innovation. Thus, we can say that R&D activities and consumer orientation are the main determinants of innovation. However, profit ratio and growth rate do not have any statistically significant effect on firms' innovation.
